Well a guy I know that lives up the road from uncle let his son shoot his Mod 27-2. Now Dan has several cases of Blazer Brass 357 Magnum ammo on hand. This was used, and right now I do not know the case lots numbers. But Dan will be in touch with CCI over this one, and I think will never use this crap ammo again. Notice in the throat of the barrel, there is not just one bullet stuck but 3 and am real suprized that the top strap did not give way causing injury to the shooter. |

Now how would 3 bullets get stuck in the barrel? I can only see one obviously, but that doesn't seem right to me. What the hell happened?

This is what to be found out. Obviously the shooter did not see a bullet report on the target, and continued to shoot 2 more rounds until his dad (Dan) said that didn't sound right. I do know there are 3 bullets stuck in that barrel, and I told them do not tap them out yourself. It will either be CCI/Blazer that has it done, or Smith & Wesson. But what is important is the case lot number that the ammo is associated with that also needs to be inspected.

...JB, that's about the only ammo I buy for practice...never had a problem...Might have been a squib load, but the two following it aren't their fault...never heard anyone have a squib with them.... |

Seems highly unlikely that 3 in a row are squibs, but I guess it could happen. I'd pull a few of the bullets apart and look to see if they have any powder in them. Could have been an assembly line foul up I guess.

Just a few points in response to some of the things said here. Clearly I wasn't there but I suspect Sheepdog is right about one squib and two good rounds. S&Ws are not as robust about steady use of heavy loads without shooting loose but they are very strong about overloads. I have an old magazine article about a test S&W did with an old K-38 to see if a cylinder would burst from an overload. They replaced the barrel with a blank, threaded but undrilled, so it presented a solid bar of steel to the mouth of the cylinder. They fired regular and proof rounds without the cylinder failing. They had to machine a flat over the thinnest part of the wall to get a split and this started in the lock bolt cut. It was impressive to see four (I think) chambers blocked with lead. The barrel is weaker of courrse bet this in an N frame and VERY strong. One of the magazines also did a blowup test between the two .44 Magnums available back then, the Ruger SBH and the S&W Mod 29. Everyone expected the massive, unfluted SBH cylinder to win easily but in fact it failed first. Rugers use investment castings while S&W uses forgings, which are stronger. Of course the Smith would have been reduced to rattling junk by steady use of heavy loads but that is not the same as strength. I have had factory load failures with Remington, PMC, and Fionchi (as S&W brand) but never Blaser and I have shot a lot of it, as have so many others. One squib does not condemn the brand. As Sheepdog said, the barrel may be bulged and the gun should be checked, but N frames are strong guns. I suspect only the barrel might be damaged. |
