You need a .350 Rem Magnum with 7mm sabot rounds for long range. |

in my all my years of hunting I have only shot 2 deer past 100 yards. 1 was 285 yards(measured) with a rem bdl 270 and the other 130 yards(measured) with a ruger 77 in 7mm mauser.that said I think I could have made both of those shots with the 45/70.I have killed deer with the 30/06,308 and the 270 and there is more meat damage with those rounds that a fat .458 cast bullet and I would think the same with the 444 .432 cast bullet. both of these rounds don't shoot flat like a 270 or 30/06 granted but when you hit with those fat cast bullets its a done deal another thing to ponder on......are you a hunter or a blaster.a hunter will stalk up that 300 yard shot to a 150 yard shot as long as I am typing away here if you got a moment http://www.levergun.com/articles/bdixon.htm bill falin used to be a cobra pilot pete |

I love the story of Billy Dixon. I first heard it on TV. The show Wild West Tech did it. I'd like to get the 45-70 barrel for my H&R. The barrel is 24" I believe. Not very long. |

"Gut, gut, and butt" what a riot. txpete brought up a great point. Each of the big game animals that I have taken have been close enough to shoot with my handgun. Begs the question, "why I am I carrying around this heavy ass rifle?" Getting close is fun, but the rifle lets you take animals that otherwise would get away. I hunt in an area in central WA that affords long, cross canyon shots or 15yard blink of an eye shooting in heavy timber. Here in WA, seasons are short. Elk hunting success rates hover around 10% on average. If you want an animal for the freezer, you have to be ready to shoot when opportunity strikes. Any accurate .270, .308, and 30-06 makes a great all around rifle for hunting in WA. A short, handy levergun in .45-70 with aperature sights would be the cat's meow for the heavy timber hunting that I tend to do. But it would leave me at a severe disadvantage for those long shots. |

BH the H&R 45/70's are very accurate from what I have read on them.they made the buffalo classic a few years back and thats a sharp looking rifle.you can load them to marlin level loads and with a 300 gr bullet thats a thumper.with handloading your good from grizz to mice pete http://www.impactguns.com/store/736008018715.html |

the buffalo classic rifles are beautiful with better wood which is definately a step above the standard grade.......... and that steel butt plate will let you know its a 45-70..... sort of a poor man's "Quigley down under"....... |

Odd six was slaying animals long before I was born, and will continue to do so after I am gone. No matter where you are, there is always .22, .38, and .30-06 on the shelf.

I like the 270, with many bullets availble. Large game stopping 150 gr down to a zippy little coyote loads using 90 gr TNT hollow points. |

That's a plus for the .270 for sure. I may need to get one of each eventually. | |

The 270 , 308 and 30-06 are 3 peas in a pod and there is NO big difference in all 3 of them in a bolt gun . So if you own 1 of the 3 the is NO reason to get another bolt gun in 1 of the other 2 cal's . |

The question was asked about hunting North American game. Jack O'Conner said the .270 was the one to use. I recently ordered a .308 Savage model 10 for long range shooting at the shooting range. I voted for the 30-06 because I felt it would cover anything from Elk to bear for the needed killing power. I personally use a .300 win mag for big game, mainly whitetail deer. Ben |

Being a reloader I can size to 270 or 25-06 by sizing it and then triming the case. I had a friend give a 3 pound coffee can of 06 brass. I am still using it to this day to reload. |
