I was thinking about buying a Savage .308 heavy barrel rifle. From what I have read, the Savage is a good rifle for the price. I looked at two models. One was the Model 10 FP that had a factory stock. Price was $749 at Gander Mountain. I was at Scheel's and saw the FCP which was in a HS Precision stock. Price was $1079. I could get the one at Gander with a nice scope for the price of the one with the upgraded stock. Anyone know if accuracy would be any better for the extra money. I'm just a paper puncher on a budget, not a sniper. Thanks, Ben |

From what I've read the savages are pretty damn accurate right out of the box. The cheaper models are pretty good for the money too. If you're just looking to punch paper and hunt, I'd look into the these models. http://www.savagearms.com/11f.htm |

from memory, the standard 10 FP is a pillar bedded stock. I have known one officer who had one and it shot extremely well.......but he was also an acomplished rifleman/sniper. at 100 yds practicing "sniper", he could consistantly hit the bridge of the nose of a photogenic bad guy target every time.......and he kept meticulus shooting records every time in a book he took to the range......and kept the targets as well for documentation. He could "afford" this rifle and get the glass he wanted............. it ought to be plenty good for paper punching........and still give you funds for good glass... can't comment on the FCP..... |

I suppose with better glass ( it currently has a Leatherwood Expert 6 x 18 x 44 on it) and a better rest, like the "Rock" or something similar, I could do much better.... |
