I have the oppertunity to pick one up for $250 OTD. It's in pretty good shape and I know they were only made for 3 years I believe it was. Is this a good deal or no?

i would call it a fair deal considering the insane prices today......... if this one is drilled and tapped on the left side for a scope mount all the better. "b-square" made one heck of a good scope mount that enabled you to mount a scope and still use the irons. Weaver also offers a scope mount. you can have the stock relieved and have her drilled and tapped if necessary. i've known reloaders who had these that would load up the lighter spitzer style bullets like the nosler 125 gr balistic tip and get a bit more speed.......the most critical factor is over-all length dealing with the magazine. there are better made guns out there......but for the price and function they are a bargin. the only other 30-30 you can get for that price is a H&R single shot......ain't seen used levers under 300 in a while............ they were made much longer than 3 years under various names such as the savage 340, springfield, etc.........several model numbers there that escape me at the moment....... |

I don't have experience with these but as you are already interested in the H&R, wouldn't it be better to get a barrel for that? If you want a repeater it seems better to spend the extra on a lever action. Do you really think you would be happy with this? That is more important than it's value, it seems to me. It does not seem to fit you, where either the H&R or the lever action does.. Boilerplate: This is in no way a criticism of Bounty Hunter, his intelligence, or the wisdom of his choices. It is strictly the opinion of the commenter and reflects his own preferences and failings. Any resemblance to criticism or mocking of any other Gunnerforum member (except perhaps Johngoboom) is entirely coincidental. |

i think you been spending too much time watching "law and order" on tv.......or in the shower reading shampoo bottles and the fine print....... reminds me of bill engval and his deal about warning labels on curling irons and rub a tub dolly dolls...... on the stevens...........that kind of gun would "fit" me...... | |

"i think you been spending too much time watching "law and order" on tv.......or in the shower reading shampoo bottles and the fine print....... I don't watch TV and I can't read without my glasses but I sure have waded through a lot of boilerplate. "reminds me of bill engval and his deal about warning labels on curling irons and rub a tub dolly dolls..." I have no idea what this refers to but it sounds kinky. The bolt action .30-30 does seem more in character with you. I just can't see BH wanting to show it to friends or take it afield or to the range. Maybe I just don't know him well enough to judge. *Boilerplate omitted as I don't know how good or bad a mood BH is in.* |

...NO, Mac...a closet gun's the opposite of a safe queen...it's one you wouldn't rack or put in a glass case...but you get a lot of use out of it anyways...also known as a bumper or a truck gun...

The only advantage is pointy bullets for a 30-30 . Spend a few bucks more and get 308 with real power or a lever 30-30 for the fast chambering . |

I had one years ago. As mentioned, you can put regular spitzer type bullets in it, and get a little more range. However, the only way you can mount a scope on it is one of those off set things, which I hate. The one I had was a decent enough gun.

If you just want a shooter/back up gun get a Mosin Nagant and a 440 round spam pack of ammo. It will still cost less than $250 for both, and you'll be all set.

Well I like bolt action rifles and didn't know if it was a sweet deal or not. I guess if I get a 30-30 I'll go with the Marlin lever gun. My local always has them used for under $300.

...if I were going to hunt with it, I'd buy a Marlin .35 Rem instead of .30-30...have you ever studied into them???

Yep. Seems like a good gun. My cousin used to hunt with a 32 lever gun. That was nice too.

...the .35 is better against brush...heavier bullet...not much ammo available but as a reloader, that'd be no problem....

I think I'd go with a Guide gun in 45-70 if I decide to get a lever. |
