well, considering i honestly did not know what navy jelly was.....i might try it.

my daughter's 250 savage had some rust in the barrel years back when i first got the rifle.....i scrubbed, JB bore compound, and lightly used flitz on the bore. Rather scared i'd cause more damage than good. The bore still has a rough spot in it that you can feel with the rod/patch. But the gun will still shoot sub 2" groups at a 100 yards......how long it will shoot this good is a guess. Orginal pencil barrels for this mannlicker stock model are non-existent in 250.......

Re: Is this useful to you old rifle buffs???

Naval Jelly uses phosphoric acid to remove and "kill" the rust. It is effective but care is needed. A former employer purchased a set of Colt Dragoon Lee and Grant Silver and gold plated revolvers for $5,000.00. The silver plated one had some rust spots and he asked me to remove them. I polished the shots by hand and used Naval Jelly to kill the rust so it would not come back. I then used Oxpho-Blu to protect them as they did not show to the outside. It did a good job.

It's long been the product for this and is still the standard as far as I know.

I was intrigued with the Naval Jelly trick but I cringed with the oven cleaner, snadpapaer & spray paint.

I think the naval jelly would be a last resort. Start with JB Bore Paste & a Tornado brush
