I'm looking at a used Stevens 110 for about $200 OTD. The blueing is rough, but I'm thinking degrease and paint with Dura coat maybe. Would this make a good little hunting gun? It's a 30-06 caliber and would be for Jen. She likes my Remington and likes the 30-06 caliber so we've been looking around.

I don't think you're going to find a .30-06 much cheaper that will still shoot. Why not...I like guns like that. I call em neighbor guns. If the SHTF it's something I can give to a neighbor with a bunch of rounds and say you watch my house, and I'll watch yours.

I was thinking that it would be a good back up gun, just in case something were to happen to the Remington or something. Since I'll be reloading for the caliber anyways, it's a huge plus that she likes it. I can get 2 used Savages for less than one Remington. |

If you do get it, do a write up on how well the duracoat works. I've always been curious about that stuff.

Will do. I might just get some Krylon, cause I'm cheap and lazy. |

On a side note, my local wally World has a Mossberg ATR in 30-06 for $257 OTD. That's not bad for a new rifle, but I know nothing about them.

That would be the one I would get...They have had a few decent reviews for a hunting style rig in some of the gun rags. And for $50 more, you know you can put a scope on it.

If its a wood stock look good around the stock bolt. There stocks are made of sawdust and glue or something and you cant keep the stock tight. And the wacky way they lock there barrels with a jam nut will sometimes move and change your head space so look were the barrel and the action meet there should be a mark on each were they were set at factory, see if they still line up. The triggers can be set up nice but got to watch if you go to far it will shoot on bolt closing.. I know thats a lot of bad sounding stuff but Ive been over my friends 110 2 times now and it is staying OK now.I had to remake a stock bolt bushing for the stock. Its has been 14 years since i did anything to it now.. But they are good shooting guns at that price you will do good if all looks OK were I spoke of. Watch the new guns like Remington they have plastic parts in the trigger group. |

That's a big list, Johnny. I'd put a synthetic on it. Would that be a problem? John, the Mossberg isn't drilled and tapped for iron sights and she wants to have them incase she wants them. I like the option myself and put a set on my Remmy I got off ebay. |
