Savage boasting new bolt action..

They are boasting in the guns + ammo about a new bolt rifle, The new savage is called The Edge and playing off the old 1960s 340 bolt action clip fed rifle. That model were awful in my experiences with them..I had 2 bad 30/30s and a 243 i think it was.I have a 340 in 222 that seems OK but i don't shoot it any more.It held a tight group and consistently.Had a old weaver 4 power scope. The side mount scope mount sucked 2.You cant USA a scope over 32mm ends..
Anyone ever have one ??? how did it work for you ?????

Re: Savage boasting new bolt action..

Had a 340D in .222. First centerfire rifle I bought. Didn't have it very long and never shot paper with it. Don't miss it much.

Re: Savage boasting new bolt action..

That side mount was awkward and the bolt handles were short and straight.Made it feel shitty..My 3o/3o would not feed.243 jammed 2.
My 222 seemed to work OK.I lost the clip and got a new one and it was Even better so i parked it before it got wrecked..

Re: Savage boasting new bolt action..

the old 340 series...............had played with one in 30-30 and from memory the groups were certainly not impressive.........seemed adequate for minute of deer back then............I do remember it was more accurate than a ruger mini 30
Have heard a few people brag on their 222 and 22 hornet versions.
The magazines were definately tight as in over-all cartridge length and did not let one play with OAL at all.

I think the hottest caliber pressure wise back then for the 340 series (or what-ever as springfield, stevens, and revelation i believe all had a different model number) was the 225 winchester which was dang near a 22-250.

This new "edge" rifle seems to have some differences. The rear of the receiver does not look "split" as in the old 340. They are showing top of receiver mounts as well. No 30-30 this time out but they included the 30-06 as well as others.

I am curious about it.......thanks for bringing it up.....

marketed as "entry level"..............wonder what the price is?

The retail starting price is just shy of 3 bills. About three & a quarter for the scope package & it goes up from there for the camo stock etc.

well, that's a piece of good news..........american made and not a re-branded import at that price ought to sell..........

Re: Savage boasting new bolt action..

I got to see one of these today, i think my local has it a bit overpriced, but they have everything overpriced. They had a standard .243 black synthetic stock available for 320, and a camo stock 22-250 for 369. The rifle was comfortable to shoulder, but the trigger seemed pretty stout to me. I think the marlin xs7 would be the better deal with the accutrigger clone for the same price.

I'm looking for a 223 rifle for fun and varmints, i think the marlin, steven, or the new savage will be a good rifle for what i am looking for. Now to come up with the $$$, and make a final decision.

1 thing i learned, just when i think i have all i need,,,,,i need another one...lol.
