Years ago as a pup I purchased an Enfield Mark 4 from Roses department store. For those unfamiliar with them, think of Walmart or Sears but on a much smaller scale. Anyhow the rifle was inexpensive and the ammo dirt cheap, both of which were advantageous to a kid without a lot of cash. At some point I parted ways with that rifle and shortly after came into a Russian Mosin Nagant. While I liked the Nagant, I think I liked that Enfield even more and now as an adult regret parting with it. I think I may have to get another and hold on tight! Anyhow this is my ode to a remarkable rifle & cartridge which can pop targets with the best of them, harvest game and defend a nation if called upon to do so. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GY_Ui78DiY4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEkZYGQsvRQ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee-Enfield http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.303_British |

My brother had a 303 and it was a nice little rifle. Never nailed a deer with it though.

I believe it was the best military bolt action ever issued. It had more firepower and was faster than any other. It was not as strong or rigid as the Mauser but it was more accurate than was needed in a battle rifle and gained speed by giving up the unneeded strength. I think the #1 mk3 was the first to go with the medium length 24" barrel for all applications instead of the longer rifle and much less useful carbine.
