So as a concealed carry permit holder in Virginia, both the VA and WV web sites confirm a full reciprocity agreement. http://www.wvago.gov/gunrecep.cfm?state=VA#guntitle So that is exactly as it sounds, it's as far as I'm concerned, WV is the same as if it were a part of VA with regards to carrying, right? And I looked on their web site and there don't seem to be the same restrictions about things like restaurants where alcohol is served that there are in Virginia. So do I follow the WV law when in WV? Or do my VA restrictions apply when I'm in a reciprocal state? |

Well in this case the rules in Rome are more lax than they are in Virginia, so I'm cool with that!

...man, them are some good advice!!! What's legal in Texas is NOT legal in OK or LA...for instance, I can carry into your home in TX no problem unless you ask me not to...in LA I must ask your permission before I carry into your home...under my TX or LA license...some states say yes in church...some no...you have to honor the rules of the state you're visiting...best to get a copy and read before you go...to know the prohibiting signage in that state, etc, that these books on the state laws often leave out...I'd request the equivalent of Texas' Concealed Handgun Laws Handbook from the issuing authority in the state you visit in...and they're usually free...and then you're covered.... ...only if you're in the Mafia, Eddie!!! |

This document: http://www.wvago.gov/pdf/BookletWVFirearmLaws.pdf outlines the restrictions on where you CAN'T carry a gun. Standard stuff, schools, courthouses, etc. (page 4). but in Virginia, my permit issuing state (http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_Res ... ealed.shtm) the list is the same with the ADDITION of things like airport terminals, churches and restaurants that serve alcohol. So to me that seems like I could enter a restaurant in WV carrying concealed and not be in violation. Also, what's the deal with parks? That is a national park rule, right? If state parks are not included in these documents, can I assume that you can carry concealed in either VA or WV with a VA permit in state parks? |

...if you're issued in Va...and in Va. you can carry in an alcohol-serving restaurant...then when you go to WVa, their permit rules say NO carrying in an alcohol-serving restaurant...then they allow you to carry under your VA permit but you must do it the WVa way...and you can't carry in a WVa alcohol-serving restaurant...the rules of the state you're in trump your home state's rules....

It's the other way around. VA says not in restaurants. WV says they honor the VA permit but they don't have restaurant restrictions (that I can find). So even though my VA permit is MORE restrictive, I have fewer restrictions when I go to WV. Seems odd, but I think I'm correct since I wouldn't be breaking any WV carry regulation.

...gotcha...if you're permitted to carry in WVa by the reciprocity agreement, and you are...and there is no violation for carrying in an alcohol-serving restaurant in WVa....then you're not violating anything...I had it backwards... ...in a nut's shell...keep the laws and restrictions of the state you're in...and you're good to go...all you can bring with you from home is the permit... |

Just make sure you have a copy of the laws for the state that you're visiting...there are still a lot of LEOs out there that are not familiar with the law. If you do happen to get pulled over, it makes them feel a lot better when they can call in a question to verify what you have printed out, and not try to figure it out themselves with dispatch.

It was only good in and south of San Francisco and only 3 guns can be listed on permit and the only ones you can carry and to change guns you must go to sheriff range and get checked out and then go to the permit dept and have it add to your lic , which take all day for this BS . And renewal was every year and took all day , if you had all the paper work and ducks in a row and back to range in case you forgot how to shoot your gun . I think the permit was $50 a year ... |
