well............following much the same "logic" as i followed in the semi selection........ i wanted a reputable pocket revolver something light weight something with a great track record and "proven" over time stellar reputation of the maker who will back it should there be a problem parts available all over the market something i am familar with and trust grips...........a huge reason........multiple choices available size as related to the over-all revolver and also in the grip selection for pocket carry a finish to protect the weapon from thousands of pocket carry's over the rest of my lifetime......this gun will be carried a lot. simpliticty.........just good ole' basic plain jane meat and taters............. again..........old technology, perhaps obsolete, boreingly reliable. not cutting edge. with obsolete grips and an old obsolete Pachmayr version of the Tyler T............... dressed like a silver Angel to hopefully watch over me.............i present to you......... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . the smith & wesson model 642 centennial airweight 38 spl............. |

How is it with the +P's? The LCR is snappy.

yep. no fancy engraving......... the 642 airweight....and the the ruger LCR with crimson laser grips...........in reality, either weapon with 158+p's is not going to be a fun weapon at the range and i can testify to that....... now an LCR with regular grips might be a different story as i have read numerous accounts that the std grips on an LCR do make a difference in felt recoil. I have obtained a short box of speer gold dot 135 gr for the 38 and will give them a try...... http://www.speer-ammo.com/products/short_brl.aspx ......what i am definately going to budget for next time passing by a cabela's or bass pro is the federal nyclad load.......which might be next week....if a prisoner transport happens......to orange county wayyyyyyyyyyy down there by Lousiana I really like the nyclad..........soft lead in a nylon type coating, mild recoil, and some tests i've done in years past into wet sand, and an old ballistic vest confirms that this stuff holds together and expands. |

...I bought a box of those last year...went right back to the old ones...never fired 'em...I'm so happy with the lead semi-wadcutter HP +P...I've heard the nyclads are back in production and are even better than the lead ones...never saw or had any...

First n' foremost....OUTSTANDING choice...there's much n' more to be said regarding the wisdom of choosing a "bread n' butter" wheelgun. Talk about peace of mind, for example.... I frequently carry a Smith 342...first cousin to yours n' 2nd cousin to Sheepdog's. It...or any good wheelgun...simply means one less "something" to worry about. I AM curious about the Ruger LCR...you guys ever shot one? Like you, I've read that the grip used really "eats up" some of that recoil.... |

Great choice. I prefer to carry one of my .45acp auto's, but find I carry the .38 airweight more than any of my other choices. It is the only gun I have that I can carry in my shorts' pocket, which means shirtless at the beach during summer is an option. Since I am a mid 30's white guy with no ass, any heavier weapon (like my sp101) would leave my shorts around my ankles. I rarely carry more than one gun, but in the dead of winter, I sometimes need to zip up my coat. Makes access to my holstered .45 difficult. No problem to add my little airweight to a coat pocket. I live in a very low crime, suburban area. Quick trip to the store? No problem, the little .38 gets tossed into my pocket and away I go. I practice with this gun frequently. I can get quick, accurate shots off, especially at close range. My larger guns aren't any more accurate, but they do make it easier to get fast hits. As to ammo choice, I have had good results with the speer +p 135gr short barrel hp. They can and do expand. I have blown up a few squirrels (slight exageration, but expansion was readily apparent) with that load. What I don't like is the price and am not sure if penetration is adequate. The 158gr lswchp +p is a proven load for the .38. Expansion may not occur out of the snub. Follow up shots are slower with the 158gr vs 135gr as it recoils significantly more. Bonus, I can get two 50rd boxes of the 158gr lswchp +p on sale for the price of one 20rd box of the speer gdhp. I used up the last of my dold dots this past summer and haven't bought more since. I think you did good deputy. |
