Will try to keep this short but may not be able to. First ,2 weeks ago at our clubs outdoor range, I was firing my SP and it lock up on the 3rd shot. Second. about our firing line. It's a concrete slab with a sheet metal roof and very noisey . I was wearing plugs under my muffs and a fellow 10 ft away was firing a 40SW which also in very noisey. I did not hear or feel the squib 2nd shot or the possiblly a squib on the 3rd shot . Thats when it locked up. That is the 3rd time in fifty years of reloading that this has happened. Forward, now to when I got home was ready to get a dowel rod and drive the 158 gr.LSWC back into the case. I thought maybe I better measure where it located first. Turns out it was entirley in the barrel and the next one had the nose in the forcing cone. Now what do i do.?? After a lot of measuring I decided to drive the front bullet back just so the rear of it would be at the cylinder. After a few licks it went .017 too far. called friend who has more guns that I do to get his opinion. .I had already removed Hammer and Trigger group so we laid the frame on it side on wood blocks and gave the cylinder one get lick with a rawhide mallet and it sheared off a thin piece of lead and opened the cylinder. After a very good cleaning I went over the frame and cylinder with a magnifing glass all looks fine. reassembled it all seems to be working fine. Im going to run at least 50 rounds in it before going back to an every day carry piece. I have decided NOT to carry reloads in a defense gun. Almost forgot, all this with 2 live rounds still in it. |

I would slug the barrel just to make sure it’s the same size all the way through, JMHO

Rugers are tough. When they came out with the P85, Ruger cut the slide where the ejection port is, plugged the barrel with a 9mm bullet, and kept shooting it until the barrel was filled with bullets and wouldn't shoot no more. No apparent damage, didn't even bulge the barrel. When they came out with the Old Army, they filled the chambers of the cylinder full of bullseye powder, seated the bullets, fired all six chambers, and even that didn't hurt it.

Well I'm glad it all worked out, Claybird. I never carry reloads in my carry. I carry the expensive HP's. |

i generally have a lot of respect for ruger...though i am still a bit leary of most of the new product line. The "P" metal series has always impressed me. As far as the SP, i certainly agree......built like a tank.......but hauling that tank around in a pocket has been my problem.... one of these years i might actually go back to waistband carry while off-duty...i doubt it....but i might.... |

I love my sp with a 3" barrel. It shoots more like a full size revolver than a snubby. Very easy to make consistant hits, even at longer ranges. For me, it is definitely a belt gun. It carries iwb better than a full size gun because of its smaller cylinder. Pocket carry is reserved for my smith airweight.

a 3" SP does interest me as does a 3" adj sight model 60 smith. My main concern with the SP's and GP's has never been about trigger pull, durability, or strength. My main concerns has always revolved around the fixed sight regulation. how is your SP in regards to poa/poi......? | |

I shot my SP101 3" at 15 yards usually and the POA/POI was pretty good with the 158 grain 357 rounds. My reloads grouped pretty good at that distance too, but didn't kick as hard. I like the 3" SP101 myself.

XLCH I might have given the impression that this was the first time fireing this gun. It's had over 200 rds. of lead and jacketed run thru it. Never a problem before. Deputy125. The Sp101 2" carries best on me in Rob's Silver Dollar Pancake outside the belt at the 2:45 or 3: oclock position. Grip stays tight against my body and cover well with a loose fitting tee or Polo type shirt. Dark colors or patterns seem to work the best as far as printing goes. |

Gunrunner, I used to feel the same way. I spent considerable time loading a small amount of defensive ammo and kept it in my guns. I have moved away from that now and keep premium factory ammo in my defensive guns. I have found them very reliable and I suspect the legal aspect is better with factory loads. I would not feel at all uncomfortable with my own loads if I had to use them. I use single stage presses and take a lot of time on my practice loads. With the amount you have loaded and fired you have good reason to feel confidence in them. I have done little loading for years. |

In the last 10 yrs , I can't pickup a gun mag without seeing a RECALL NOTICE on ammo . Remember the recalls go out after there ammo has damage a guns or hurt the shooter . I don't need or want that stuff in a gun I'm betting life on . I got money for a good lawyer , but not a hospital stay , that's my way of thinking . Ruger is making a SP 101 in a 10 shot now .
