Chiappa Rhino revolver

found this video...........it shows one of these bottom barrel rhino revolvers with plexiglass replacing the side plate so you can see the mechanism along with the "false hammer"........

looks a tad complicated and busy in there. Also noticed the cylinder is not round but rather 5 sided sort of design.

This video shows it to be a bit different than from the still pics as in a bit more bulky and flat out ugly.

still would like to handle and at least dry fire one just to say i did.

i was hopeing for rossi or taurus price range (affordable) since its so ugly and an import........guess not.

listening to the sales lady trying to figure out the retail.........its not a low-end price.

That thing is ugly. It's also pretty useless. It's no good for CCW, and anyone wanting a 357 have so many good ones to choose from, I don't see why they'd pick that. I wouldn't buy it even if it was dirt cheap.

It looks like it solves problems that didn't exist.

Re: Chiappa Rhino revolver

That's not a new idea ............... I seen a pic of a pepper box like it years ago . S&W made a auto loader 22lr model 61 escort http://jtjersey.com/Escort/smith.htm with the barrel mounted in grip frame not in the slide and all the Kahr's are super low in frame for positive feed and lower felt recoil and there is almost no feed ramp to speak of .

Re: Chiappa Rhino revolver

the smith 2213 and 422 series before they came out with the plastic 22A series had the bottom barrel as well.........

the little pocket size 2213/2214 series was the best sub-compact 22 auto loader i've ever owned............

still though, i want to handle a rhino revolver............probably never buy one, but still.............weird and different.........courisioty kills the cat don't ya know...............

It's an interesting curiosity but I think if I wanted a revolver I knew would last forever I'd go with the GP100.

...that or the Security Six...Colt builds legends, S&W builds Masterpieces...but Ruger builds heirlooms...no tellin' how many generations they'll last...long after we're gone, they'll still be(I hope) reliable...and ammo'll be $500 a round...black market...

Re: Chiappa Rhino revolver

well, a few shooting reports seem to be coming in on these puppies....and the reports seem to be positive.

here is a video of a rhino at the range. the reported ammo used is 125 gr 38 special +P.......and the recoil/muzzle flip seems almost non-existant....

Re: Chiappa Rhino revolver

The bottom barrel is really the right way to design a revolver. One of the drawbacks to a defensive revolver vs an auto is that the revolver recoils more for the same power. A medium frame revolver firing a .357 Magnum cartridge lifts, twists, and kicks much more than a similar weight auto firing an equally powerful cartridge like the .357 Sig or .40 S&W +P. It is clear when you shoot .45 auto in a similar weight auto and revolver that the revolver lifts more and is harder to control. It is just a matter of physics, the same recoil impulse but higher over the hand where it has more leverage against you. You see the same effect between a conventional pistol like a 1911 or Sig and a Glock or Kahr with a low bore line, but not as extreme. Putting the barrel on the bottom of the cylinder puts it even lower than on most autos and puts the recoil almost straight back.

I cant speak to the quality or engineering of this company and I don't think I like the setup for the cylinder notches but the low barrel revolver deserves some development. It solves some of the inherent drawbacks of a revolver and the only drawback I see is the high sightline, which I don't think is such a big deal.

i am absolutely fascinated by this unconventional design........sort of like smelling that milk carton when you know you shouldn't, picking at that scab when you know better........choosing the plain pup out of a colorful litter because you know no one else will........

i know nothing of this company, their reputation, parts, or service........much less if any support is even available on these shores...........but still, like passing by a car wreck, we all tend to slow down and take a look.....

i would definately like to find one and fondle it........its not everyday that something of this sort is seen or experienced....

Re: Chiappa Rhino revolver

What can I say, I once bought a Grendel (pre-Keltec .380 that fed from M 16 stripper clips). Keltec developed and sold novel and different designs that were creative and advanced. They were successful and have influenced bigger companies with their innovative engineering, and I say this as one who owns no Keltec guns.

This is an interesting and advanced design. If well engineered and well made it has much to offer. I would not mind handling one and will be watching it. If you get a chance to handle one I will be VERY interested in your impressions. An updated K frame sized .357 Magnum with a 4" barrel could be quite interesting.

Re: Chiappa Rhino revolver

I have said in a previous thread on this revolver that I would love to have one. It would be in my "collector" category, rather than my "must have" category, but I would love to have one nonetheless. I am a big 357 fan, a revolver fan, and a "different" fan. Being a "different" fan is, of course, what keeps me here.

Re: Chiappa Rhino revolver

From the videos I've seen recently they do seem to exhibit very little recoil as a couple of you guys mentioned. I still think I'd prefer a GP100 but if the price was right I think I'd be almost as happy with a 6" Rhino.
