wood cleaning

hey. My new Model 12 has about sixty years of sweat and dirty worked into the stock I think. It looks great to me but I think if I could give the stock a deep cleaning I might be able to bring out some more detail in the wood grain. It's the middle gun here.

Any ideas on what to try? Thanks.

Re: wood cleaning

Try some Murphy's wood oil. I don't know if it'll lighten the wood up or not, but it'll clean it.

Murphy's works well.

Just make sure you use a good wax when get done...Birchwood Caseys gun stock wax works very well.

Re: wood cleaning

So Murphy's is something for furniture or wood floors, right? Not a gun specific product. The other should be available at a decent gun shop or is that an online order?

Re: wood cleaning

Yeah, you can get most birchwood casey products at any decent gun store.

They work well, and are really not that expensive.

Yeah it almost seems like if I stripped the finish off there would be a nice piece of wood under there.

Re: wood cleaning

If you want to refinish the whole stock (now I sound like a comercial) I have used the B.C. stock finishing kit...the tru-oil that comes with it is a really nice product. If you take your time and follow the directions the stocks come out really nice.

It's what I used to refinish my Model 12 16 gauge that was BEAT UP. It came out really nice.

Re: wood cleaning

I like the idea of a kit that has everything I need.
Maybe I'll try to give it a good cleaning now, then if I'm not happy with it, over the winter I'll take a stab at refinishing it.

If you do refinish it 41Magnum is the man to talk too...that guy knows his stuff when it comes to making a stock look purty!

Re: wood cleaning

Everyone has their own way of doing things. So here is what I did with a 97 that was much worse than yours. I went to wally world and got citious organge wood striper took all the wood off the gun. Then put the wood in a metal bucket took an old paint brush and went to town on brushing on the stripper. Did that several times, let it set over nite. Washed it off next morning with warm water. Let it dry slow in the house. Several days later another old paint brush put several heavy coats of old english wood oil for dark wood on it. Let it dry several days. Set it out in the hot sun once it was hot or warm to the touch I took and old T shirt rubbed all the excess off the wood. Then put Johnson paste wax for floors on it buffer it a good long while. Turned out great, so great if fact a friend had to have it paid me twice what I paid for the gun to start with.

Re: wood cleaning

I was thinking citrus, cause it's great at grease/oil buildup...sounds like it worked real good, Snuffer!!!

Re: wood cleaning

EZOFF oven cleaner makes a great stripper & is cheap. Also check surplusrifle.com, theres lots of good stock refinishing tips on there.

Looks good. I haven't refinished a gun in quite a few years.
