Re: Polishing my SP101

Flitz makes a polish just for stainless...It works pretty good. Do you have a Dremmel tool? I just buff a little with the small felt wheels and a little polish on the lowest speed, and it takes the scratches right out. A Dremmel (or any of the small rotary tools are handy little buggers to have).

Thanks I never picked a dremmel up but sounds like time. Do you use it with the Fitz and the pad?

Mac now I know why you are a machinist . It take a long time to do it right and keep the edges sharp and not rounded . The screws look super too . I like Semi-Chrome a little better then Fitz .

Yep, just make sure you get a few of pads, as they don't last all that long. I have the Black and Decker version of the rotary tool, and have been very happy with that for over 10 years.

I've never used the Semichrome like TN, Flitz has always worked good for me, so I get a little guilty of the "if it ain't broke" thing.

The rotatory tools are VERY handy, I use them for polishing, cutting small delicate metal pieces (with the small cutting discs), and grinding and polishing. They also work well to take rust off of small pieces with a wire wheel. If I'm fitting a plastic but pad to a gun, it's the first tool I grab.

Re: Polishing my SP101

My error!

I did not mean to give the impression I did that. It is my gun but not my work. Here is a Mod 10 I bought twenty years or more ago. It was a security company's gun so it had holster damage and surface rust, but the action was almost unfired. I had to sand off considerable material to remove the rust and then used cold blue to protect it. This was Oxpfo blue, a phosphate finish that does not look as nice but gives good protection. I have used it on tools and fixtures I made. This was not meant to be shiny but you can see what I mean about not rounding things. The front of the cylinder opening in the frame is a bit rounded but the top, bottom, and rear are straight and reasonably crisp. It looks bad as it has had no attention for at least fifteen years but I think you can see the work. There is slight rounding of the sideplate and crane. This should have been better. It was my first project repairing a revolver. I used this to learn and practice action work.

Again, sorry if I gave a false impression. I wish I could do such nice work!

Even when I had a full machine shop I still found a Dremel tool very useful. With an assortment of tools they can do an amazing range of jobs.

Re: Polishing my SP101

Terry, I picked up a Dremel at Wally World for real cheap a while back and love it. I also picked a case of assorted pieces for it for about $20. Walmart has a few different ones. I picked up a mid range priced one. It's worked well so far.

Re: Polishing my SP101

...I'd go to pawn shops for Dremels...I've bought 3 there...Home Dippy has some big kits with just tips and bits and such for around $20---better than buying the small packages...toenails...now there's a use I hadn't thought of...
