A little frustrated with appearance of blued guns

Now that I have a few blued guns (okay, two: my Marlin 39A and my Winchester Model 12), I'm getting frustrated that what I have been doing for my stainless revolvers just doesn't keep these guns looking good.

I can't wipe down the Marlin, for instance (actually I forgot I also have a .357 Marlin lever), without streaks in the finish on the receiver. When I'm done handling it and ready to put it in the case, I want it to have a really nice finish with no streaks. No idea how to do that.

I'm basically just not happy with the appearance of my blued guns. I think I'm cleaning the insides of them satisfactorily though.

i hate to hear that cast and blast, to show you how good a friend i am i am willing to take those no good guns off your hands. I'll despose of them in a timely matter.

C'mon you should have known somebody was gonna say it.

i generally use my oil rag to wipe off the stocks, then a clean dry rag.....i make my rags out of old t-shirts, cause i'm tight.

I don't wipe the wood with oil because it will eventually swell the wood (which could cause cracking). I use wood polish for that, on the blue metal, use an oil dampened rag to wipe them down with. That will remove all the fingerprints. I like to store blue guns with a thin film of R.I.G. (Rust Inhibiting Grease) it’s getting hard to find, but the stuff works great.

Neither did I, until a gunsmith told me.

Oil sure makes the wood shine though. I use guitar polish, either Martin's Polish for Fine Wood Instruments, or Guitar Honey. Both of them really shine and protect VERY well.

Sheepdog thanks for the links. I'm ordering a buch, and stocking up!

owning a blue steel gun is like owning a gloss black car, no matter how much you wash, wax, and clean her up, everyday use will smudge'er up........
i still like blue guns for some applications as i think it adds a bit a character...........

I like the blued look, but the SS for care. It's easier. I may still get that 4" GP100 in blue though.

I use an old t shirt with oil on it and whipe the metal down with it works for me. I did think of something else I do I have a shaving cream brush and I put oil on it and whipe the guns down with that. Does a pretty good job too.
