...Jim, I'd be real careful of anything that hot around polymer grips, plastic frames, sight inserts...paint on sight dots....that stuff'll take off and soften a lot of materials....

That and carb cleaner will pull off ALL the oil. The gun's internals would be very prone to rusting. You would be better off with a product like New Gun or something similar. Just make sure you blow it out good with an air compressor. I'll tell you though. Once you get the hang of resembling a Mark gun...they're really pretty fast. It's just going to take a little practice. |

When I field strip my MK2 I always use carb cleaner, but always take off the grips. Then ya got to re oil it. Been doing it for over 20 years.

+1 on removing the grips. i have not seen grips melt for the MK II, but i have seen them come out rather discolored so remove the grips. I'd use the carb cleaner for a quick clean when you just don't have the time to disassemble. But disassembly and clean would still do a much better job of cleaning her and you would not have to really do it that often since the ruger is so reliable. Hence its problem, Too much time between disassemblies and one tends to forget how. |

Ive used both carb + brake cleaner for a fast clean, but watch grips +you better have some oil ready to re lube things.that stuff is bad on plastic parts.
