Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

I like to run a mop wet with Hoppes down the barrel, then a couple of passes with a bronze brush. Then clean with wet and dry alternating patches until they come out clean. The wet mop helps loosen things up for the brush to pull loose.

The bore snakes also work really well, as they have a ton of surface area for cleaning.

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

Pretty much the same way John does except I run a hoppes soaked patch on a jag and then I run a copper/bronze brush and brush it 15 times then another patch or two and finish off with a Ballistol patch.

You like that Ballistol for the salt water environments right?

I like this 10 time better then a standard brush and it don't scratch bore like a brush . The stainless one I like better then the bronze also .

I agree with Gunrunner. I used the SS ones to remove leading and heavy fouling from revolvers. They are very nice, work very well.

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

i've seen some gun shops that will chuck a shotgun cleaning rod into a drill with the brush and run it thru bores after they had soaked overnite in something (hoppe's?). in old shotguns, the plastic comes out in large flakes kinds or reminds me of a snake shedding its skin.

then there is this......

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

I really don't like stainless steel cleaners. I don't want to put anything inside the barrels that are harder than the steel the barrels are made of. In my armourer's training we were told to never use them.
I use Hoppes 9 for cleaning everything but it seems just to make more a a mess of the plastic and spreads it all down the barrels.
I've been shootin Win AA Lights, AA127 and that's the Only light shots I can find around here. But I reckon I'll start loadin my own soon. Midway sells wads called 'Downrange' that are supposed to cut down on plastic fouling. Anybody ever heard anything about these?

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

Downrange are good wads (but harder to find load data for), but you'll have just as much plastic fouling with them as any other...You might get a little more with the Claybusters, but you won't get any less than the Rem or Win factory wads.

Best stuff I have ever used. I have duck hunted in the gulf several times and the salt is nasty. You'll start seeing rust before the end of the day. With the Balistol one heavy application after field stripping and cleaning and it is good to go. With other gun oils I have had to clean off the surface rust and reapply for 4-5 days straight. The salt water is bad but the duck hunting is super down there.

I use the Ballistol pretty much whenever I use a gun oil now. It's a non-toxic mineral oil and works fine.

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

Drummer, try some Wipeout. It's a spray foam and you let it set for about an hour unless you use the accelerator and then patch it clean.

Terry, try a couple coats of a good automotive paste wax before you go duck hunting, should help seal the steele from the salt. I use it on all my guns and I don't hunt around salt water.

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

I have heard of this wipeout, not the drum tune huh? Oh, is it OK on bluing?

I bought a bag of the Downrange wads but have yet to use them. I've got Winchester wads loaded to use at this week's match. Then I'll scrub the hell out of the barrels and use the Downrange next week. Far as data, the Alliant manual lists the Downrangewads and the Hodgdon has a chart showing which DRs can be substituted for the rest.
I kinow one thing, the DRs are a lot slicker that the Wins I bought.

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

Well kids, the Downrange Wads are livin up to their promise. After shootin a longer than normal Cowboy Action shoot this weekend, the barrels look pretty good and 95% of everything in there came out with the first patch. At MidwayUSA, the price is actually just a tad under the Wins so it's a Hell of a deal and I'm sayin so.

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

I will post this for the second time .... A tornado brush is designed to remove the plastic out of a barrel super fast and will NEVER scratch a bore like a reg brush . You guys are making a big deal out of cleaning plastic . A few passes with a tornado brush and your done .... I just cleaned my gun from the match and 5 passes and magic the plastic is gone .......

Re: Plastic Wad Fouling

+1 on the Tornado brush. After a few patches of the famous#9 after shave to get the power residue out I run the stainless
Tornado brush concentrating mostly on the forcing cone and the choke tubes. Works for me. I use Claybusters because
they are cheaper than other in my area.
