Barrel removal

Have a Ruger Single Six with 9 inch bbl that needs some TLC. This may require removing and then reinstalling the barrel.

Have any of you removed bbls from single action revolvers?
What tools did you use?
Not going to invest in bbl vise and frame wrenches. Any ideas for homemade tooling, jigs, fixtures, etc?

Any and all suggestions and ideas appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Barrel removal

You can make all that stuff out of oak .. The newer guns are real ruff to do ...

Re: Barrel removal

The onliest reason I am even thinking about doing it on my own is sending something to a gunsmith is a long term proposition. Besides that they won't do simply what I want done adding in cleaning, functional checks etc. Too much BS and not enough actual work.

Would an oak "yoke" or blocks for the cylinder frame work in conjunction with a large pipe wrench clamping the wood and providing the leverage?

Be back later, off to the range.

Re: Barrel removal

I would think the most impotent part would be a even pull on the frame from both sides like a die holder dose when your threading a bolt.A handle on both sides of what your pulling on,so not to tweek it out of shape..

Re: Barrel removal

Good point Johnny. What do you think of using 2 opposing pipe wrenches with someone on each one?

The reason I want the bbl out is to blue it. Don't really want to blue the cylinder frame cuz it's a very nice plum which is fairly unusual for new models. I know it would re-plum over time just don't know how long that process would take but would assume a number of years.

It's nothing that has to be done right now but I hate not knowing how to do something I want done.

Re: Barrel removal

2 pieces of flat stock ,drill 2 holes while one is on top the other. Then use 2 bolts + nuts to pinch the frame between with the cylinder out.
Use tape on the stock bars so not to damage the finish of the frame.I can't see a pipe wrench not marking it up...

Re: Barrel removal

That's one thing I've never tried. Too risky imo. Let us know how it goes for you, Jr.

Re: Barrel removal

Now you want to make that gig about 3 feet long so you can have leverage and 1 guy can do it best because you know your pulling evenly, with 2 people you don't know that...

You can add a hole for a bolt through the center of the frame after its in,and make the 1 piece just long enough to go past the Cly. a inch IF you use heavy stock or solid rod on the long end.

Re: Barrel removal

Carve you blocks out so they support the frame inside and out, bolt them together and screw some pipe floor plates to the blocks, put pipes in the floor plates for leverage.
You could use the screw holes to clamp the whole thing together.

Re: Barrel removal

No The idea is to rotate this thing like a wrench or T handle.

If you bolted it down ,then it would be a vice and you would have to turn the barrel..Thats harder in my book wuthout a bunch of Mark on it.

Re: Barrel removal

Okay, I am getting it. I like your idea and even understand. Still don't know if I will go ahead with the bbl removal but at least I know how to make the tool now.
