A friend of mine has a 300 Savage Model 99, made in 1939. It has great sentimental value to him, as it was his grandfathers. The stock oulis not cracked pretty bad, and I told him that I would ask you all if you have any thoughts. He can't afford a big repair bill currently. Should he wait until he has more money and bring it to a gunsmith? Should he try to repair the stock with gorilla glue? Should he be able to find an inexpensive replacement stock that is of decent quality? Here is the picture he sent me: |

that seems to be very common to the savage 99 series...amongst others. i've seen many of them glued. been told in the past about some type of glue used with needle/syringe to get it completely down into the crack. Done that way said to be best. can't remember the brand but a wood crafts store might be a good place to check. if all else fails, gun parts corp has some stocks. |

...I'd be against using Gorilla Glue...that stuff swells and grows and foams and makes one big mess...used it on my brake pedal pad and had a stalactite growing down to and across the floor mat..... ...careful whatever glue you use don't drip down into the action... |

+1 on gorilla glue swelling and making a mess. But, it holds well...the swelling acts like a wood filler..after it dries, the excess can be peeled away...and unlike many glues, it can take stain. Drilling and epoxying rods like Johnny was saying is probably the best way to do it.

I don't know. I have only used the stuff on trim and moulding. Apply on all connection sufaces. Wait for it to fully dry. Razorknife to score the excess and then peel. I always leave just a little extra in the joints and sand lightly until flush. It is time consuming, but the end result looks good. I only do this with real wood that is going to be stained, not painted. Nearly all trim work around here is done with mdf boards. Painted trim seems to be the style, even on the million dollar homes. Cheaper material, cheaper labor. All I have to do is slap it up with a brad gun. Painters take care of the rest. Not sure if the process I use for trim work would work for a rifle stock. |

Then he let it dry I would think that would help the glue set up better. I would use Elmers wood glue myself been around a long time. I use it on my stocks, then to finsh the stock I use old english wood oil for dark wood. Then just buff it up and you should be in business. Just my 2 cents on it. |
