The History of I.O.R - Valdata Scopes Superior quality German optical glass and Romanian high precision craftsmanship with over 100 years tradition, are joined under one roof. At IOR-Bucuresti, the Romanian tradition in manufacturing the highest quality optics started in the late 1800's. During the last 45 years, as the "sister" and partner company to the original Carl Zeiss-Jena from Germany, IOR - Bucuresti developed some of the most advanced technologies in the optical field. pete ![]() The new scope was for the ZB-24 sniper rifle's replacement, the Puska Semiautomata Luneta (PSL) or Scoped Semi-Automatic Rifle. This was a 9.5-pound gas-operated, magazine-fed, self-loading sniper rifle chambered for the Soviet 7.62x54R cartridge. To meet this need, IOR developed the Luneta Puska Semiautomata (semi-automatic riflescope) 4x 6-degree Type 2. A relatively small and lightweight optic, it has a 24mm objective lens, 4x magnification and a fairly wide 6-degree field of view (FOV). In basic design and function this optic is simply a copy of the Russian PSO-1 (Pritsel Snaipersky Optichesky-Sniper Optic Sight). It attaches to the rifle via a simple adjustable throw-lever system and sits slightly off-center to the left of the rifle's bore. To increase the sniper's survivability on the battlefield, it features a permanently attached extendible sunshade. Ballistic adjustments are made via uncapped target turrets. The elevation knob features a bullet-drop compensator with settings from 100 to 1,000 meters. Windage adjustments are very coarse in 1/2-Mil clicks, and the reticle is non-centered and moves in the FOV as adjustments are made. The reticle's identical in layout to that of the PSO-1 and is designed to allow the rapid range and engagement of man-sized target. The reticle's Tritium-illuminated for lowlight use. Optically, the 4x 6-degree Type 2 sports good resolution. The lenses are coated and the image is fairly bright thanks to a 6mm exit pupil. FOV's also quite generous at 6 degrees. For use out to 400 yards, the 4x magnification works well. It's adequate to engage man-sized targets out to perhaps 600 yards, but I find it lacking past this distance. IOR's 4x 6-degree Type 2 became the standard Romanian sniper-rifle scope during the Cold War and remains in service to this day. It's currently fielded by Romanian troops fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. It's also widely encountered in Iraq, mounted on insurgent sniper rifles. Expansion With the memory that Romania wasn't able to adequately supply her troops World War II, IOR was significantly expanded over the years. In 1975 it began an increased level of collaboration with Carl Zeiss, Hensoldt, Leitz and Leica. Carl Zeiss in particular played a key role in modernizing IOR with not only contemporary equipment, but the technical expertise to properly utilize it. A second plant was opened and by 1978 IOR had become one of the largest suppliers of military optics in the world. By the mid-'80s, it employed some 10,000 workers. |
