Can any of you fellas recommend a good steel reactive target for rifle calibers up to 30/06? I have one I bought where I work, and it sucks. It has so many pock marks, craters really, in it, it is about done for. I would like to get one that falls and then sets itself back up. That will actually take getting shot! Oh yeah, and one that wont cost and arm and a leg, or the price of a new gun! Found this one: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=757462 Seems to cheap to be any good. Got pretty good reviews, except for one guy, but he said he destroyed the target with one hit from a .308! |

When i get the garage back up + running I'm going to make some.I also have some old out dated gas tanks(small 3/4 inch thick ones) I'm going to hang from trees. Every store kind seen to get bent up fast. I use heavy steel and rebar for a frame with a weight on 1 end so it will stay straight. But without a shop like nine your hands are tied. I should get my a$$ in gear and make a bunch,I have the steel and rebar to do it. I haven't welded anything in 7 years but with some TLC my shop will be ready. And with my new glassed i can see what I'm doing. I wish i has a plasma cutter, but the torch will do. i got a full week but next week I'm free so ill get some made. Ill post some pictures and see if you want any.I can make then to fit a flat rate mail box.30/06 will kill them after a lot of hits but they will last a good while.I make some nice spinners from old sockets on rebar too. |

I've never shot steel targets even with pistol, but I'm looking into making one. I wonder how long even a steel target would last being hit with a 30-06? |

Well, the one I have has taken several hundred shots with .223, .308, and 30/06, but it is looking pretty rough!

Damn! I shoot at the local stop signs. Someone comes along every few weeks and puts fresh ones up for me. |

just a wild hair thought..................... the goal is a reactive target that makes a pleasing ring and falls indicating a hit. and yet a steel target that will not get destroyed. is there a way you can let the physics work for you..........such as a target blade'ed top towards the shooter at a 45 degree angle and the bottom edged of the steel target already on the ground. it will present a smaller target, and the bullet will be deflected downward into the ground or the berm instead of plowing thru the target or richoetting back to the shooter. An old one-way plow disc comes to mind. By the way, old farm equip sales might be a good place for such discs. These discs are plenty tough (old ones we had were) and way better metal than in many targets i've seen. just have to figure how to keep it propped up at a 45 degree angle. even something as simple as a stick would do it..........or a clamp at the top in some sort of hangman's gallows in the shape of a "7". a texas star for pistols uses a break-away clamp in conjunction with for lack of a better description "nipple to hole" arangement. The "nipples" on the clamp and the "holes" in the steel target. attach the clamp to the target and mate the two.......a very secure hold of the very heavy pistol targets and they "break away" from the clamp when struck. anyways, still think a target bladed at 45 degrees will give you long life, reduced chance of back splash, and deflect all rounds downward making it safer all the way around. you can probably get by with less dead weight and thickness if angled a tad more............ making it set itself back up................that requires manual labor unless someone else has a squirrley idea.......... i'm lazy...............i would probably place it at 45 degrees attached on a bunge cord and be happy with the noise and bounce....... as it stands, my favorite reactive target is a disposable one.......shotgun clay birds. |
