OK, here is one that really deserves it's own thread. Once again I have seen a person asking for help because they took a pistol completely apart to clean it after firing a whopping 150 rds. The pistol in question is a Ruger MkIII. Folks, 150 rds does not call for a complete takedown of the pistol for cleaning, especially a .22 like the Ruger. really it doesn't. I applaud the enthusiam but stripping down a pistol at the least provocation is a great way to accelerate wear in places that aren't designed to tolerate wear. Get the barrel clean the chamber and the breech area and make sure the magazines are clean. Look at the complaints folks have about the Ruger receiver and frame being so tightly fit. Well if it is that tight, what crud could get in there in the first place? I have owned a ruger .22 auto since 1973 and I have fired literally thousands of rounds, giving it a standard, non disassembly, cleaning, without a problem. I will take it apart around 3,000 rds or so depending on the ammo, but I don't want to put more wear on it by cleaning than by shooting.

I usually only clean when it starts to tell me it needs cleaning. The exception to this is if I'm using corrosive ammo. Then even if I only put one round down range I do a complete clean which includes boiling water.
