How to clean dirty ammo

I have an old box of ammo, it's tarnished and even has some finger prints embossed in it, I tried wiping with alcohol but that didn't do much good, I've read about tumbling but I don't think I'd be comfortable with that, any way to get them shiny again or are they safe to shoot as is? Mixed brass and steel casing

Old ammo that no longer looks good could be a safety risk. Tarnished cases aren't so bad, and still shoot without being shiny. Any actual buildup of crud would go in the trash, if mine. Ammo is not that expensive, to risk an eye, finger, or damaged gun over.

Shoot it and tumble the cases.

I have tumbled loaded ammo to remove bullet lube but I use a Lortone rotary tumbler. A little jeweler's rouge will brighten up the cases. I would NOT tumble loaded ammo or primed cases in a vibratory tumbler. If you really want to remove tarnish from a box of cases you can use Brasso brass polish. Used to use that on brass uniform insignia and belt buckles. Always be careful not to contaminate your primers.
