Questions concerning pistol grips

First question is out of general curiosity. Why are pistol grips such a big deal as far as gun laws are concerned? For example, I was talking to my brother about shotguns and he mentioned pistol grips being illegal in California, where he lives. I don't understand why a gun's grip would matter, does it have to do with it being easier to Conceal maybe? Second question, I know if you buy, say, a mossberg 500 with an 18. 5 inch barrel and a factory pistol grip, u don't have to get a special tax stamp as long as it's within the legal measurements 18.5/26 overall and as long as it came out of the factory with a pgo. But what if u take a full size mossberg, shorten the barrel and add your own pistol grip, if it's still 18/26, would I have to have a special stamp because I altered it? The only thing I've read in the Oklahoma gun laws is you can't have a shotgun barrel shorter than 18'', it doesnt mention anything about pistol grips

Pistol grips are a big deal because they look scary to the left loonies, and they say the grips are a big deal. On the Federal side they aren't scary enough.

I guess my main question is if there's anything I need to know before adding a pistol grip to my shotgun. I know if you buy them that way, you don't have to mess with the tax stamp but what about altering the shotgun to where it's no longer fired from the shoulder, would that make it 'any other weapon' or whatever.....

I think your best way to find this information is to check the State laws where you live. A google search of shotgun laws in Oklahoma should get you started. Also you could call the State Police and ask them about it.

Possibly ask a local gun dealer. If you live in California....move.

I looked up the Oklahoma laws, the only thing they say about shotguns is u can't have one with a barrel less than 18 inches. As far as asking the police, I guess I could, but every time I have called to ask them a question in the past they were a bid dick headed and acted like I was bothering them. I posted on yahoo answers but if course got conflicting responses. A gun dealer would be a good idea
