Colt 38/357 1911

This is a discussion on Colt 38/357 1911 within the Gun Talk forums, part of the Gunner Forum category; I saw an article that featured a Colt 38 1911 made years ago. I never knew that colt made an semi auto 38. Anyone here ...

New one on me, but not surprised. Colt has always been big on kits to convert to a different cartridge. I'd say kind of obsolete, now, given all the 1911s being chambered in 9mm.

I can't get the link to work right, just sound with a blank screen.

I remember something about 1911s made in .38 Super, but that's a whole other cartridge from a Special.

Googling "1911 Colt .38 Special" comes up with a lot. Seems most were Gold Cup National Match models.

Colt used to make 1911s in .38 Special wadcutter loads. I think they were blowback only so only for light target loads. S&W made the Mod 52(?) in .38 Special wadcutter for the same market. It was a locked breach so it could handle hotter loads but they still had to be wadcutter length to cycle. 9mm was less common and not made for target use and .38 Supers were not known for target accuracy as they chambered on the semi-rim instead of the case mouth.

Target shooting was centerfire and .44/.45. The target revolvers from Colt and S&W had dominated the centerfire class but people who used 1911s for .45 wanted to be able to use the same platform for the smaller calibers as the autos took over the big bore class.

I see the video says one locking rib on this kit so it would be stronger than blowback but still only for midrange target wadcutters. I have read of some being blowback but those may have been conversions. I thought the factory pistols were this way but I never handled one. The S&W had the same lockup as the 9mm Mod 39 so it could be loaded up to decent levels, as long as it was only wadcutter length.

Of course Colt made a number of autos in .380 and .38 ACP but I suspect you meant 1911s.and .38 Special?

You are correct, I included 357 in error.
I did however own a Colt 1911 that was a 38/357.
It was a safe queen and I let an interested buyer own it.

I never seen a 38 spec in 1911 frame , but Bo Clerke in the 60's made a 38/45 which shot a 38 bullets in 45 brass . The brass and barrel is still made today . Take a 45 brass and run in a 38/45 die and you have it made in 5 seconds . Only a barrel is need to make the gun conversion from 45 ACP to 38/45 and make a great target gun . Modern round is the 357 Sig which is easy to make also and only need a barrel to conversion a 40SW to 357 Sig .

The .38/45 was a very reliable cartridge but the .38 Special wadcutter loads were very well developed for target shooting and the 1911 Gold Cups and S&W Mod 52s were extremely accurate with them. They were strictly for competition and I think they normally only held 5 shots but that was enough for match shooting.
