This is one of the few things my Dad and I disagree on. Mom and Dad retired and moved to the panhandle of Idaho. Beautiful, wild country. He thinks every critter that could possibly have people on the menu ought to be wiped out. He is especially pissed about the reintroduction of wolves and grizz to the area. However, I think dangerous predators are part of the attraction I feel towards the wilderness. I think states ought to have the authority to manage the population of predators to minimize the risk to farmers, ranchers, and outdoorsmen with hunting and trapping. The cougar that my daughter and I saw during deer season 5-6 years ago is one of our most exciting shared memories. My Mom's most exciting memory out hunting was the lone grey wolf that stood watching her from less than 25 yards away. Her rifle was pointed at the wolf the whole time, just in case. But she had no desire to shoot the critter. Wolf populations are getting out of control. For example, the wolves have decimated the elk herds south of my parents in the St. Marie area. The feds need to let states deal with it. But I don't want to see the wolves wiped out. |

sounds like the wolves are starting to be "attracted" to the sounds of gun shots............. they might be associating gun shots with a free meal and track towards the sound for miles............just take over the kill and enjoy the king's protection.............elk is good eating don't ya know...... What is the law up yonder about a bow hunter carrying a sidearm for protection? |

...I agree with b.roberts' view...I wouldn't slaughter 'em...but let one threaten me or mine and it's game over...kinda same like stray dogs...or bangers...or illegal aliens...

I like wildlife, and with the exception of nuisance animals, if they leave me alone, I don't bother them. If any animal, four-legged or two-legged, come at me with killing on their mind, they will be history, Laws or No laws. Survival of the fittest, and my gun makes me the fittest.

As you can see in the artical, the pack was not detered one bit with one of their own getting killed. They kept on advancing and followed the hunters in their retreat of the area. These wolves BTW are not the breed of wolf that was common to Montana and the lower 48, but the bigger ones from Canada that were introduced into Montana.

I have a greater fear of any of our predators that travel in packs, than the ones that travel mostly alone.

Muzzleloaders and archers were prohibited in my state from carrying any modern firearm until just a couple years ago. I always thought the rule was blatantly unconstitutional. Someone else must have agreed, because several years ago, the rule changed to allow the carrying of modern sidearms for protection.

i still think the gunfire is actually attracting the wolves like a dinner bell......the wolves consider themselves top of the food chain since they are "protected".... it would seem tehy do not fear men anymore...... |

Aaaah now we got the okay to, control them through a hunting season. For those that want to hunt them, its okay, but I'm just glad the argument is over.
