It was close to 5:50 this evening and I had a 4 pointer work it's way down past my stand and I shot him with my muzzleloader in the chest area. Pulled the shot a little and hit it back in the liver. He ran off and I heard him stop after a while and thought I heard him go down. My directional hearing isn't the best anymore so I was kind of guessing which way he ran as I couldn't follow him by sight that far with the brush. By the time I started looking it was dark. Sunset was at 5:28 here this evening and that makes legal to 5:58 in NH plus it is cloudy so it got dark early. I went back to the house and dropped off my gear and muzzleloaded and picked up a spotlight and a tactical flashlight and headed back out. I had trouble getting on a blood trail but finally picked one up and found him at about 6:30. He only went about 100 yards but was nestled in some thick stuff. Got him cleaned out then had to drag him up to the house, get the ladder out of the barn, put up my hoist, oops find the stinkin gambrel back down to the barn, found it, hoist the deer up. I rinse my deer out and off with a hose and then get them cut up next day if possible and in the freezer. It'll hang tonight in the 30 degree air and I'll take it to the butcher tomorrow. I took him down to the check station and got the paperwork done and then brought him back and hung him again. I think I'll sleep in tomorrow morning.

Deputy: I have a Knight Wolverine that I converted to 209 ignition. It is an in-line with a scope and I loaded 2 pyrodex with a Thompson 250 gr shock wave sabot. It gives me excellent accuracy and is a nice light little muzzleloader. I also have a Knight Disc that is good with 3 pellets and is supposed to be accurate to 200 yards but I have never gotten the kind of accuracy I'm happy with so the little one it is. |
