I had to get in on the levergun fun

Seeing some of Johnny's beautiful lever guns made me dig mine out and snap a couple of pics. This was my Grandfather's deer rifle. It has gotten quite a few deer, none by me yet. Made in 1932 and still shoots like brand new. When I received it, I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with the buckhorn sights, so I had a lyman receiver sight installed. Standing, offhand, quick hits on one gallon milk jugs at a hundred yards is now not a problem. With rested aim, pop cans are in mortal danger at the same distance. I haven't installed the target aperature yet and put in on paper to see how small I can group this thing.

When I take this hunting, I usually only load it with two or three rounds. I just can't see needing more than that and jacking out a bunch of shells when I get back to a vehicle or camp is a pain in the butt.

Here is how I carry it when I go hiking in the woods with my dog. 7 rounds in the gun, 9 in the shell holder.

I will often stick 4-5 one gallon milk jugs, filled with water into my backpack, hike up to 5 miles, shoot jugs at various distances(15-100yards), pick up garbage, and hike back to car. The hike back is much easier. My dog and I enjoy the exercise, plus it gets me into great shape for hunting season. It isn't an assault rifle. But it is a pretty useful utility rifle with 15 rounds of 30-30 in a nice, light and ergonomic package.

...carry only one full one and make that coffee...and three empties...by the time you get where you're going to shoot, the other ones will be full...at least it works that way for us old guys...how long's the barrel on that rifle???looks kinda long...the Wiki Wizard says they made longer barrels back then http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Model_1894

I love the woods configuration. Nice little sleeve there. I would disagree with you though. It is an assault rifle, a COWBOY assault rifle.

It has a 20" barrel. I think the camera angle, especially the pic of the rifle leaning against the loading table, made the barrel look longer than it is.
