Is a Mare's Leg illegal?

How come there are none for sale? Or do you just have to make them yourself?

Re: Is a Mare's Leg illegal?

making one yourself would be illegal............

what makes them legal as far as i can tell is that they did not start out life as a rifle.........they are delibertly made the way they are from scratch and are classifid as a handgun.........but i aint no expert........

here is a link to the maker with some info............

Deputy is correct. Any new ones are indeed classified as handguns. To make one yourself would be turning a rifle into a handgun, and can get you in deep doo doo.

Too bad, because they look cool. Useless, but very cool. What was the name of that old western where the main character carried one of those in some kind of funky thigh holster?

Re: Is a Mare's Leg illegal?

I haven't found where there was ever one ever used in the old west guess it was one of those TV guns. It did look cool but I never did see him load from the belt jut like the rifleman never seen the shells he loaded in the rifle. Hollywood got to love it, seeing a dirty harry movie now I laugh at the stuff I paid money to go watch. I was taken in like everyone else.

did some searching and came up with this

Steve McQueen in a tv series "wanted dead or alive"

Quote:
Mare's Leg - Bounty hunter Josh Randall (Steve McQueen) nicknamed his rifle "Mare's Leg" on the western adventure WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE/CBS/1958-61. Mare's Leg was an 1892 Winchester 30-40 carbine with a sawed off barrel which handled like a pistol but had the explosive punch of a rifle cartridge. Josh once said of his gun "It's kinda like a hog's leg but not quite as mean, If I have to use it, I want to get the message across."

TRIVIA NOTE: The original gun used on the series (as of the 1980s) was housed at the Fort Spaghetti Restaurant and Museum located at 999 Ball Road, Anaheim, California. The collection (owned by the Stovall Family) is listed as "the world's greatest individual old west gun collection" and valued at $1,500,000. A colored-photograph of this classic TV gun and many other TV western firearms can be found in Chapter 11 "Arming the Fictional West" in the glossy, beautifully designed book The Peacemakers: Arms and Adventures in the American West written by R. L. Wilson (Random House, 1992)

Funny you should ask about one Jon. We just got one in this week in 44/40. I got to agree with b. roberts, they are useless as far as I am concerned.

Yep, that was the show I remembered. Fond memories of being just a little tyke sitiing on grampa's lap watching westerns with him on saturday mornings. I must have been five years old.
