My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

The time has almost come. I think that I will finally have the money for my .357 lever gun within the next week.

I have decided to get the Rossi (Yes, I know Sheepdog will be so happy for me ).

Where I am having the hard time is between the 16 inch stainless, and the 20 inch blue. I am slightly leaning towards the blue, but figured I would throw out my arguments here, and get feedback

Pro Blue arguments:
1. Looks a whole heck of a lot better
2. Is on sale, and is $60 cheaper
3. 10+1 capacity (vs. 8+1 on the shorter bbl)
4. Longer sight radius

Pro SS arguments:
1. Will resist scratching better (I don't worry about rust, just scratching)
2. The 16 inch may be slightly easier to carry, and quicker to target (Only guessing here)

I am getting the gun for a few reasons:
1. I have become enamored with .357, and must add to the collection
2. I have no handy home defense rifle yet. I only have a .22, and a bolt action 30-06. I would much rather have a .357 lever gun for this purpose than an AR (Though an AR is on my list ... for much later)
3. I will be hunting hogs, and in certain hilly areas, our small California deer with it.

I know that only I will be able to make the final call, but I would appreciate any feedback from all of you. Here are the pictures, just for fun:

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

beats me as far as stainless vs blue. Blue does wear but its just part of the "character". But if i was on the coast or in a part of the world where it rains a lot, i'm more liable to go with stainless.

as far as the 16 vs 20"..........i've tried the "trappers" before......too much muzzle blast and they swing a bit too quick for me.........the 20" seems like a good compromise on over-all length compared to the 16" and 24" and still gives a smooth swing..........

and if you ever contemplate CAS later on down the road, the 10 rd capacity is the way to go......and if you don't like the rifle later on down the raod, probably easier to trade the 10 rd lever off as there would be a greater demand/market from CAS.........

Oh yeah! I forgot about CAS. I have thought about that possibility, though it has not been on the forefront of my mind lately.

It is good to hear the handling feedback too, thanks.

Blued barrel bore smooth up and season better that stainless for cast bullets and will not lead up like stainless . Since it's not a target you can go either way .

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

just make sure it says brasstech on it and not LSI.

pete

psst buy a marlin or a winny

viewtopic.php?f=24&t=7028

Hmmm a short story on rossi carbines.
I bought one(44mag SS) NIB imported by LSI.I went to the range and it shot 8-10 high @ 50 meters.I called LSI and they said they would send me a new front sight that was in JUNE.well I still don't have a new front sight .last week I called brastech and asked if they had a new front sight for my rossi carbine.after much tap dancing I was told if it was imported by LSI they would not do any warranty work/repairs and or parts. even after I told them it was a brand new rifle the man said he didn't care even if it was a new rossi that I had bought.
I again called LSI still no front sights in stock,I asked to light a fire under someones a$$ and I needed one and I had been waiting since june.he then told me he had to get parts from rossi in brasil and were waiting on a import license to import parts .rossi was bought out by taurus last year and I do believe there isn't going to be any parts for along time.so if you own a rossi that isn't a brastech you are screwed.
I returned the carbine to the dealer I bought it from and recieved a refund.because of the way I was treated by brastech think long and hard about buying any rossi/taurus 92 carbine.

JUST MY .02

pete

UPDATE still no new front sight.do you want to give these people your money???.screw rossi/taurus and brasstech they stink

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

the ex importer of rossi firearms.regardless they (braztech) showed their true colors to me very rude and wouldn't sell me a new front sight.just "another" horror story about the warranty from a company known as taurus.
buyer beware.

You might spend a few more $ but will get a much better rifle if you go with a Henry

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

I have two Henrys in 22mag and could not be happier with them, if the center fires are as good as the rim fires go for it. Check at leverguns.com and see what they have to say about them.

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

i know nothing about the big bore henrys............

but i did use henry customer service one time years back when i had some trouble with their little survival ar-7 22 rifle. I got the head man himself on the phone......he actually took the time to visit with me and discuss my problems.

Great guy........though a bit hard to understand as he spoke some sort of weird yankee english

long story short------he sent me free parts asap to get me back up and going again. Very impressed with the service and dedication to the product line.

the only possible negative i can think of concerning the henry besides costs is that the loading port is at the muzzle much like a tube fed .22.......not very quick to reload.

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

A Henry costs nearly twice as much as the Rossi. I am sure it would be nice. I has taken me a while to save up for the rifle, and I can only get that because I got a "Pastor's Appreciation" gift. While Pete's and Sheepdog's bark on my left shoulder is loud and clear, the bark of TGR and many others on my right shoulder tell me that Rossi is a fine choice also.

Sheepdog, if I promise not to whine to you if I am not happy, can I still whoop it up with you when I kill my first hog with it?

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

Now remember mine is over 15 yrs old and has had 20,000 plus rounds threw it . I would pm or call Steve the 92 Rossi guy like Mac did . He knows the good , bad and the ugly about them and he makes race guns out of them every day .

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

The Rossi will serve your purpose just fine I like 16" barrels but thats just me.You will never shoot it enough to ware it out.

The Henry and winchester+marlins are good guns but if your budget is a Rossi then its a Rossi I would get.

Re: My brain hurts from trying to make this decision

I did it. I just got through ordering my rifle.

I settled on the 16inch Blued Rossi.

Now the painful waiting begins!
