Surprising Discovery

I just got back from the range with my brother. I took the Walther P22 and the Ruger 10/22. Now you all know that I can't seem to hit anything with the Walther pistol and sometimes I get lucky with the Ruger rifle. Today started out no differently.

I am right handed, so naturally, I shoot "righty" and use my right eye. I was getting fed up so I trid using my left eye. SURPRISE ! I started hitting the target consistenty.

It is a bit strange and uncomfortable but it works ! Now, I guess I have to try actually shooting with my left hand because it is very awkward sighting with my left and shooting with my right especially with the rifle.

I do believe I am on the right track, so the next step is to sight and shoot "lefty"

Who Knew ?

Re: Surprising Discovery

...point at a light switch across the room with both eyes open...then close one eye at a time...if your finger stays on target...the open eye is your dominant eye...if it moves...the other eye is dominant...we should shoot rifles with our dominant eye...which hand we shoot handguns in makes no difference as long as both eyes are open...that's the way I learned to shoot...don't squint at all...

Re: Surprising Discovery

yep........sounds like an eye dominance issue......handguns don't matter as sheepdog says you can keep both eyes open.........or just cock your head over for the dominate eye.

as for rifle and shotgun.........well, ain't been there so i really can't say about off-side dominance.

Re: Surprising Discovery

No kidding. When I point to a light switch, I see one light switch and two fingers. If I hold that pose, (lightswitch betwwen the two fingers) and I close one eyeat a time, they are both off the switch. Must be my astigmatism....

Yep, same here but I hold the left finger on the switch, when I close the left eye the finger is on the switch. When I close the right eye the finger moves to the right.

Re: Surprising Discovery

Try taking both hands palm out in front of you and make a small triangle with your thumbs and fingers, Look at the distant light switch, door knob or whatever looking with both eyes open through the hole. Slowly bring your hands back to your face and your hands will automatically go to your dominant eye.

I'm right handed and left eye dominant, but when I shoot handguns I generally lean my head onto my shoulder and sight down my left eye, altho i also keep both eyes open. All of my rifles are scope sighted, so it's a moot point there.

Re: Surprising Discovery

The pointing at a door knob or whatever doesn't work for me, either....

so I gotta use the method that I described....
