I chronographed my current load Sunday for my Encore pistol in .454. It was a 300 grain Lee cast bullet @ 1760 fps. Do you suppose that if I hit something with that it would be harmful? Or are all of the woodland creatures wearing kevlar now? I also was shooting long range, and hit a small metal chicken @ 950 yards with my .308.... The other critters were from 500 yards and up, with 950 being the farthest. I kept shooting just below a "coke can" sized chicken @ 800, but my son hit it with one of his rifles. All in all it was a good shoot! |

I'm voting, damage will be done with that load. I haven't done any real long range shooting in many years. |

Something that far would have to be the size of a truck for me to see it!

What is your lead mix and powder ? The highest fps I got without leading is 1450 in any gun with a 25 to 1 using a ungas check bullet . 950 yard " WOW " I would love to able shoot on that range |

Gunrunner, the bullet is a Lee 300 grain g/c cast with a/c ww lubed with White Label Lube's Carnauba Red. the load is 29.5 gr of Lil' Gun, and the barrel of the Encore is a stock 12 incher, with a 2x7 Burris, and Burris signature select rings. The fired brass is fine, no extraction problems, no sign of excessive pressure, no flattened primers.... And Starline brass...Oh, no leading, either.. I was really surprised when I shot over the chrony. The loads were very consistent. My .308 was running close to 2700 fps, give or take a few. These were with 168 gr. A-Max and Re15, altho I did try some 175 MatchKings with IMR 4895. They did almost as well. My .308 is a single shot Savage model 12 BVSS-S, with a Leatherwood Expert scope. I wish it was the mil-dot model, but that came out shortly after I bought this scope. This was the first time I've ever shot anything past 200 yards with my .308. I did shoot at a 1000 yard target a few years ago with my sons rifle, he dialed it in and I shot 5 shots on a human silhouette. I got 4 kills and a shoulder shot. My son took me to this current range, out in the middle of nowhere in BFE, Georgia. It's a private place, but the owner doesn't care who shoots there, as long as you clean up and repaint and reset the targets when you're finished. |
