Back to the range, today, with the Contenders and Encores for more long range work, long range meaning 200 yards.

First up was my G2 Contender wearing a 14" 44 mag barrel and a Nikon Force 2.5-8x scope with a BDC reticle.

Despite my love of our S&W 44 mag revolvers, this rig is still the accuracy champ when it comes to 44 mag. Maybe it was me having a good day or maybe the gun having a good day or both, but darned if this gun didn't start printing 1" groups at 100 yards with Winchester white box 240 grain JSPs as I dialed the scope in. Now, ladies and gentleman, there are very few 44 mag rifles, not to mention pistols, that can print one inch groups at 100 yards, but I have one in this gun.

Since this scope has a ballistic reticle - two BDC circles under the crosshair - I wanted to see how it printed at 200 yards using the BDC circles.

One shot told me that I would have to use the bottommost BDC circle to hit at 200 yards, so proceeded to shoot several three shot groups to check for point of impact and, of course, accuracy potential, though, in truth, I was not expecting to maintain the same MOA out at 200 yards. After all, that is asking a lot of the 44 mag cartridge.

Guess I'm going to have to rethink that one. Two three shot groups were right at 2 to a bit over 2 inches, but this last group takes the prize. Considering the distance, this is the best group I've ever shot with a 44 mag. This is one I'll never forget. Yup, happy dance time on this one.

Thanks, guys.

Yes, 8x. On this type of ballistic reticle, if you change the magnification, the circles correspond to a different yardage. That means if I was to shoot it out in the field at 200x, I would be stuck to 8x. Not too practical for field work, but works at the range. In truth, have never been a big fan of ballistic reticles. For hunting or field shooting, have always been a believer in the KISS principle.
