Gamo Whisper .177 cal.....

Yesterday afternoon, I picked up my Gamo Whisper from a local gun shop…$276,46, including tax and two tins of Gamo Hunter pellets (lead). Got it home, read the instructions (which are very sparse, but adequate), and installed the scope. Set up my backdrop, and sighted in the scope. I was quite pleased that it only took 9 pellets to get it sighted in. Tree rats were not active yesterday afternoon, but were out in force this morning. They were staying about 45 – 50 yds away….I hit two, but all it did was scare them…..this is not a long range rifle…..it should do ok out to maybe 20 or 25 yds, but the pellet just isn’t big enough to be effective any further. One of the one I hit, was sitting on top of a fence post….scared him so bad, he fell off the post….you could tell it really didn’t feel good, because he was slow responding, but in about 45 seconds, he high tailed it out of there….I went to the post and there was no sign of blood anyplace. I measured the distance, and that post is 48 yds from my shooting position…..

The rifle is definitely quieter than a .22 rifle….quiet enough for you people that have neighbors. The cocking pull is advertised at 30lbs….I agree with that ad……The quality of the Gamo seems to me to be very good. It’s fun to shoot, but you’re not going to do any rapid fire with it….cock barrel down, load pellet in chamber end of barrel, close barrel…..the 2 stage trigger is adjustable for length of pull

Several air rifle companies advertise them for hunting….in the 1000 – 1200 fps class (at least with the .177 caliber), I think that is a stretch, unless the game is small and close. I see more of a use for this gun in target shooting…..just as fun as .22, and a lot less expensive…..

Here are a couple of targets that I shot this morning at 35 yds…..

Looks like a good shooter. I have toyed with the idea of buying a good air rifle, but have not done so.

If I had to do it over, I wold probably get the .22 cal pellet gun....the pellet is just a little larger....but I really to like this one, and with use, I'll figure out just how far the effective range is.....

That's an expensive toy!

It wouldn't take out a cat though. I need something that can.

The Air Hawk was too noisy and too fast [1000fps] for me . It was pretty accurate out to 75 yds . Glad to hear the Whisper is quiet . Good luck with it .

Re: Gamo Whisper .177 cal.....

I have shot the Gamo Whisper a bunch. The contractor that I did most of my framing for had a raccoon problem. They were eating the fish out of his water feature. Head shots dropped them from about 25 yards. Body shots did not drop them, but they never came back either. It was pretty quiet for a powerful airgun. I was very impressed with the accuracy of his rifle. We were easily popping soda cans at 50 yards. I had been accustomed to air rifles being a very close range sport. That is not true of these modern, powerful air rifles.

My wife and her mother were shooting empty coke cans with their bb guns, and putting nice little holes in the cans.....I then shot one with the Gamo, and you wouldn't believe the way it ripped that can open....I was impressed....the tree rat today, succumbed to a throat shot.....
