I got to go to the range today. I took my .454, but only had some heavy .45 Colt loads to shoot from it, as I didn't want to shoot the .454 loads. A young 20 something lad came up and saw my Encore and asked if he could shoot it. As he was trying to look through the scope I could see that he wasn't real familiar with a scoped pistol, and was getting kinda close to the scope. I told him he'd be better served a bit farther back, as the pistol scope wasn't like a rifle scope, and the thing may jump back when it recoils and bite him. He mumbled something, hunkered down and pulled the trigger. To his credit, he didn't drop the pistol, and his shades stayed on, but there was red stuff pouring from a crescent shaped cut above his eyebrow... He didn't want to shoot it a second time. I'm just glad I hadn't loaded a .454 round in the pistol. |

That'll learn him for not listening! I was going to post and ask if anyone had seen you. You seemed to have vanished on us. Nice to see you back. How do you like that Encore? I've wanted one for a ong while, but they're pricey and I always seem to find something else to spend my money on. |

It shoots better ( for me anyway) hot .45 Colt loads. I have it sighted in for a pretty stout .454 load, so the .45 Colt loads shoot about 6 inches high, and group wonderfully. I've considered trading it off for an AR or a good Savage .22-250 with an Accutrigger, as my shoulder will probably be operated on and I guessing that the .454 will be too much. I already have a Blackhawk convertible .45 Colt/ .45 acp and a SRH in .44 mag... but Lord knows I like handguns.... |

Nothing like a good AR though! Maybe even an M1A!

Tom, had my shoulder rebuilt 3 years ago and the doc said I could shoot after 6 months if I could stand it! |

That's a good thing to look forward to. I dunno if it's going to be rotator cuff surgery or shoulder replacement, the MRI is scheduled for this Monday A.M...... Hopefully neither!

I hope you get good news, Tom. A bad shoulder sucks for someone who loves shooting. The only AR I have is my Colt. I have about $1700 into it and another $1500 in ammo that would be useless if I got rid of it. My M1A's getting burried with me. |

I love range reports that end in morons bleeding. Good thing that feller didn't have one of my 300 grain XTP Mag loads in there!

Well, it was a 300 gr cast bullet, just not my normal .454 load....I'd probably have had to have my scope surgically removed...

When I got home I discovered that the front sight was loose,so I put some blue loctite on the screw and now all is well, and it's shooting quite well @ 25 yards. The .44 surprised me. With a full load of 2400 and a 245 gr cast plain base bullet, and standing up shooting off hand with no rest the bullets were going where I pointed them. At least at 25 yards. My fireform loads were IMR 3031 and a 170 gr. Ranch Dog bullet. I was getting patterns rather than groups, as opposed to my jacketed bullet loads that went where they were supposed to. I really wanted to see if my shoulder was too messed up to comfortably shoot my rifle. There were a few loads that did hurt, but as of yet not enough to make me sell my rifles. I still have to try my 7mm Rem Mag, though. I did get some help to fire form my brass. A local Youth Minister from the First Baptist Church showed up, awaiting some of his charges. I let him shoot until he shot up what was left in my box that I brought to fire form. I do believe that I made his day. As I was leaving my youngest son was driving in, so I went back and shot some of his rifles that I'd never fired before: an A Bolt 7mm-08, a custom 30-06 A.I. that he had made, and a Remington heavy barreled .223 that could shoot the left nut off of a gnat @ 100 yards. All of his rifles are Very accurate. I believe that most of his scopes are Leupolds in the $800 range. Waaaaay out of my price range.. All in all a good time. And only a month and a half since my last range visit. I think I'm already seeing the advantages of being transferred to day shift at work! |

That sounds like a real good time, Tom! Nice to hear that you're getting out and shooting. I don't get out nearly as much as I like, so I know how it can be. So I didn't se an update on the MRI. How'd things go? |
