Just shot the old M1A

I took it out with 2 new magazines, 40 rounds of NATO surplus, and the Eotech attached. The Eotech is a nice scope. Using a Monopod to steady the gun allowed me to put 4 shots into a 1.5" group at just over 15 yards. Not real far, and not real great I know, but I was just sighting it today. And at 15 yards, off hand, I put 15 rounds into about a 6" circle. I was shooting fast, and didn't use the sling. If I had used the sling to steady the shots, I think I could have kept them tighter. I was just looking to see if the Eotech would get on target and hit what I was shooting at quickly. It does. I had no failures at all this time out. I'm sure now that the problems encountered last time out were due to the brass hitiing the Eotech. Moving it to the rail in front of the gun is an improvement. It will also allow me to use stripper clips if I choose to. I fired 20 rounds at different size trees at different distances, just to see how fast I could move from target to target and get solid hits. I had 20 hits and emptied the magazine in short order. I wasn't real sure about the rail and Eotech before, but now I'm convinced that it is a logical set up for what the gun is intended for.

Sounds like you are happy with it. That is what is important.

Re: Just shot the old M1A

Well it don't look like the classic weapon we all love, but it'll do what it was made to do. Next time out, I'm going to shoot a little further and get to know the trigger a little better. For a military style trigger it isn't really all that bad. I'm going to try and do all my shooting without the mono pod and use the sling to steady the gun a little better. I'm happy if I can put 100% of my shots into a man sized target at 50 yards off hand.

I know you can do better than that.that rifle using a sling head shots at 100 shouldn't be a problem.

I'm itchin' to get out with mine again soon as well BH. I still need to "dial in" iron sights before I think about scoping it. Sounds like you're definitely gettin' there pal!

Re: Just shot the old M1A

Slowly but surely, Bankshot.

Pete, I think you're right. The gun is capable of it, but I won't be without shooting many rounds. I think with a steady rest, I'd be good at 100 yards, but off hand will take some practice.

Re: Just shot the old M1A

...forget the target and shoot balloons...place them about 1' apart...you'll be poppin 'em in no time...blow them up to head size...painting faces and naming them optional...gets your mind off the paper....

Re: Just shot the old M1A

it takes a little time and effort but if you want to put some perspective into it you can do this.............

take a cardboard box that is roughly human torso size on two sides.
cut a silver dollar size hole in top of box end.
pass kite string thru hole.
tie inflated ballon to string in box
tie other end of string to top of target stand to hang the box.

we have the boxes covered in various old shirts of different colors/designs to simulate a bad guy. when you hit the sweet spot as in "center mass", you will pop the balloon and the box wil fall to the ground with the busted balloon passing thru the hole in the top of the box......................if the wind is blowing good.....all the better to make it a more difficult shot. The balloon represents more or less the lungs/heart area.

a good reactionary target to use with clothing so you have no definitive aiming point just like in real life..........
