I also took the GI. The GI was once again flawless with all truncated bullets. We put about 80-85 thru the 2 guns. Mostly hers. The loaded refused to feed a few of them. One bullet I brought back. It wouldn't chamber at all and the bullet was set back. I don't know if it happened in the gun, or if it came off the press that way. A couple of the fail to feeds, may have been from limp wristing. It was at the end of the shooting session. Not sure. I did order a GI guide rod and recoil spring plug. The 2 piece plug does nothing for me. It axtually backed out about an 8th of an inch while shooting. I don't know if the spring got hung up and caused the failures to feed or not. I do know that I have no use for a full length guide rod. If Les Baer refuses to use them, there must be a reason. The GI set up is just fine for me. I'm going to change the set up this week and then run some ball thru it next weekend. I think it'll be 100%. The trigger is sweet on that thing compared to my GI! |

i am far from a 1911 expert..........but when i had one the full length guide rod was a pain and i noticed no difference in function......a big difference in take-down and asembly. should i get another 1911.....it will be with a std guide rod.......same thing goes for those plastic "shock buffers".......honestly don't think they are worth the effort unless i shot thousand rds a month...........

Some of the top dogs in the 1911 building field don't use full length guide rods or buffers. I just read an article in one of the gun rags about the buffers being useless.

Sorry to hear about the feed problem.... I hope it's just a break-in issue or ammo Q.C. I traded a new mil-spec. because of the trigger.... Compared to the loaded is was going to need trigger work to be equal to the loaded model... Springfield would have probably corrected it... (also was planning to change to sites to nite sites). In that my local offered a traded up with no loss... (The mil-spec. value had increased), I traded up! I liked several things about the mil-spec that I miss.. Primarily the lack of front cocking serrations, but also the second pair of grips. It came with the nice cross cannon wood grips and also a pair of black rubber grips. I also liked the lowered ejection port... by factory. The gun was very accurate, even with the stiff trigger. One of the few I miss. Tell us about the accuracy, comparing the different models, if you get a chance. |

Pathfinder, I've owned 2 GI's and 2 Mil-Specs. I have one of each now. Between the loaded and the others, there doesn't seem to be much difference in defensive style shooting at 7-15 yards. Maybe bench shooting would show one to be superior over the other, but I never bench shoot hand guns. It's not really what they're for. I do like the night sights on the loaded though. Compared to those GI sights, they're great.

My loaded combat stainless is the only springer without night sights... I'm thinking of changing the white dot sites to NS just to be able to pick any one of them up and view the exact same site picture for the sake of consistancy... I do hate the thought of 10 years down the road having to replace that many dead NS's though.

You don't have to replace the whole sight, just the tritium vials. Molon Labe Kim |

BH... I feel the same about th' full-length guide rod. Personally, I won't use one in a 1911-type pistol. My problem has been primarily that th' full-length rod pretty much mandates that th' pistol require two two hands to "get goin"...which is certainly normal. But...one of the things that has always appealed to me about the "original-configured" 1911 ( and the Browning HP, for that matter!) is that if one arm/hand is disabled the thing can be be cycled with one hand by placing the plug ( or, in the case of the Browning, the bottom-front of the slide) against something relatively solid and then cycling the slide...don't always help th' cosmetics but it's sure comfortin' if you're in a bind. And, when I was carryin' an old Super .38 or a Remington-Rand 1911-A1 for work, I did practice chamberin' in a like manner and it was a good feelin' to know it worked. Some years ago, I either read somewhere, or was told, or perhaps both...that the horse cavalry troops, when mounted and armed with the 1911 pistol, could/would chamber a round single-handedly ( again, while riding ) in the course of drawing the pistol by sliding the pistol up n' back to th' point where the holster widened ( where the trigger guard would be when the pistol was fully in the holster ) and then pushin' against the hard leather with the slide-end, thereby chambering a round. Now a knowledgeable Calvary guy I am NOT and there probably is somebody around th' forum that might know for sure, but anyway....if it ain't true it sure sounds good and, heck, in th' forty-plus years since I've heard of it, well, like I said, it worked...but WILL NOT with a full-length guide rod.... |

...right, Jody...and the Israelis carry barrel empty and jack the slide by shoving the rear sights into and down their leg...works great as long as you're off the trigger...we all need some time figuring out how to make what we carry work with only one hand...might be necessary sometime...just once...

Gentlemen, there are a plethora of methods to charge the 1911, none of which is dependent on the abscense of a full length guide rod.
