MV; Smith CS-9 vs. Beretta 92

If anybody's interested...played with th' Chrony for a few minutes before th' rain got me yesterday mornin'.

Had some IMI 95GR JSP 9-m/m handloads ( 4.7 grs of "titegroup"). Was wanderin' how much difference in MV there would be between a 3" bbl ( S&W CS-9) and a full-length-service weapon ( my Beretta 92-D, just a bit under 5").

Using five shot groups, the average for th' CS-9 was 1148 fps, and the Beretta was 1254 fps...in this most un-scientific study, there seems to be darn near 50 fps difference per inch of barrel...

yes sir it would appear so.......don't know how critical 100fps would be as far as penetration/expansion.

since you got one of them chronys, could you compare 22 handgun/rifle velocities?

Deputy...

Don't know that th' 100 fps or so would be critical, either...particularly since both of th' things are "movin' on"....

I'd be glad to check some .22 LR stuff. It'll probably be a coupla-three weeks before I get th' chance, but will do. We'll check maybe two lengths for rifle and two or so for handgun.

I'm surprised that it was that much velocity increase. I don't know if the 100 fps would greatly improve the bullet function, but I bet it wouldn't hurt.

i' know that a 357 out of a carbine is light years ahead out of a 4" revolver............or so i've read......

wonder if the 38 spl is a huge improvment......
