Well, Deputy...and anybody else that might be interested...did another totally unscientific check with th' chrony, only this time it was .22 LR. Used two types of ammo, Federal Champion 40GR solid and Winchester Xpert 36 gr. HP. Number of rounds per group varied between four and ten. As a point of interest, the Winchester is rated at 1280 fps per the info printed on the box. Don't know about th' Federal... For th' handguns, used a 1950's vintage Ruger Single-Six w/5-1/2" bbl, and a Beretta .22 cal conversion kit on my 92-D service weapon. For th' rifles, used a 1940-era Remington model 41-P single shot sportin' a 27" bbl., and a Rossi model 62 "pump" carbine with a 16-1/2" bbl. Using the Beretta, the Federal averaged 1048 fps and the Winchester 1133 fps. The Ruger averaged 1005 with Federal and 1118 with the Winchester. The Remington averaged 1176 fps with Federal and 1284 fps with Winchester. Th' little Rossi averaged 1184 fps with Federal and 1262 with Winchester. Interestingly, with the Federal 40 gr., the Rossi's average with the shorter bbl was greater than with the Remington's longer bbl....beats me! And, the Beretta semi-auto proved to be a bit faster that the sixgun.... Not surprisin', tho', it does appear that there's a minimum of better'n 100 fps difference between .22LR rifle and handgun, dependin' on th' weapon and load...but apparently not as much spread as there appears to be between CF handguns vs. rifle/carbine. |

Thank you for the interesting report. Great! .22 rimfire ammo is loaded to achieve full velocity in a 16" barrel so a longer tube gives no extra speed and if long enough may reduce velocity as the drag on the bullet slows it down after the pressure falls off. |

excellent..... i appreciate the hands on experience. at least the winchester achieved the factory specs in the 27" barrel... looks like just as a general marker catch-all.....a rifle averages ballpark 150 fps better than a handgun without getting into specifics of ammo and barrel length. |

Very nice of you to do the sacrificial work of shooting guns in order to further our knowledge. I deeply appreciate your willingness to lay your life down for the cause. |
