Finally have a few minutes to write up my range trip

On Monday I finally got to go shoot my new SP101, and my GP100 with its new wood grips. Pictures of the revolvers can be found in this thread (http://www.gunnerforum.com/forum/vie...p?f=29&t=10879).

First, the short and sweet on the GP. It was perfect. I shot better with it than my last time out. That is probably due to a few things. 1. It has been less than a month, rather than several months since my last range trip 2. I have the spring perfectly dialed in 3. I have been doing a lot more dry fire practice and had my grip just like I want it and 4. The new grips feel perfect

Second, for the more complicated report on the SP101

Overall, I love the gun. But we have to get to know each other a little better.

If I only reported on what the gun did on it main intended use, it would get rave reviews. I was able to put 5 quick shots in a 8 inch circle from 12 feet pretty every time.

The other good news is that this gun is FUN FUN FUN! I shot all heavy loads. Either my hot and heavy reloads (158 SWC being pushed by 15.8 gr of H110), or Remy 125 JSP, which tend to be pretty hot. If I missed the felon with my lead, I think that he would be burned to death from the flames. It is the first time ever that my hand hurt enough that I had to stop shooting. For me, this is a good thing. My hand did not hurt that much until at least 60 rounds were down range. The recoil was very controllable. I will have to work up some softer reloads so that I do not have to stop after 60 rounds next time.

Now for the less than perfect part. I suck with this gun right now when it come to slow aimed fire. Not complete incompetance, but not where I want to be. I was able to hit a soda can from about 15 feet about half the time. When aiming at paper, I was frequently high and had a real hard time with the trigger. At first, I thought I was flinching in anticipation of recoil, but the more I payed attention I realized that was not it. The recoil was not bothering me at all at that point. When I would take a long slow trigger pull as I tried to aim carefully, I would get to the end of the trigger pull and try to jerk it the rest of the way. It was like my hand was saying "GO ALREADY!." The trigger pull is so different from that of my GP 100. I was often able to overcome this tendency by really concentrating, and never did this when I was going for quicker aimed shots.

The other bad thing is with the wood grips. The felt great, but they broke. A very small chip appeared at the top of one half of the grip, where the back of the gun meets the top of the grip. It is small enough that I could sand it down and refinish it myself, but since they are brand new I contacted Badger. He said that he would take care of it, so I am happy. I wonder if my love of heavy loads is going to be too much for these grips. I sort of suspect that it is a fluke though.

In addition to my two revolvers, I got to shoot my buddies XD compact in 40 cal. That was very fun ... for an autoloader

Let us know how things go with th' 101. The only one I've ever fired was a .22 version, and that was at least fifteen years ago...but...the 3" ( or 3-1/4"?) sure does appeal to me. Its gotta be tough, and it's apparently handier than my GP-100...

The SP101 has a much harder trigger pull than the GP100, in my experience as well. They usually need a little work to make them better.

Re: Finally have a few minutes to write up my range trip

I have already ordered the spring kit for it. After some experimenting, I have just the right springs on my GP. I suspect that new springs, combined with the slicking up I have already done will help. We shall see. Probably will get better as I simply get used to it too.

it might be my immagiation...............

but..........looking at the pics of your SP compared to the GP....with the SP, it looks like with the badgers, when you pull the trigger from the grip angle you are having to pull UP as well as BACK on the trigger stroke...

or are my eyes playing tricks?

That may be true. Even if it is, I hope I can get used to that because I really do like the grips. I have a feeling I will be experimenting with this one quite a bit. I really says a lot about getting to know your weapon.

...getcha some Hogues to compare with...keep 'em in your pocket...if you have to shoot someone, you don't want those furniture grips in some dusty evidence room till the Grand Jury's over...just change 'em while you're waitin' for the PD to show up...

Re: Finally have a few minutes to write up my range trip

...it took me a good bit of practice to get used to my SP(and I'm glad-it was a good thing )...and as you stated, the trigger pull in DA was stiff....but mine has the hammer...in SA its smooth as silk....the DA was rough, but after being broken it with 1000+ triggerpulls she is nice and smooth and I love it ...I didnt replace the springs, but have heard they do help immensely.....methinks you may just need more triggertime with yer new 'girlfriend'...

I just got a package in the mail. He repaired my chipped grips. The look good, but you can tell where the repair is. Perfectly usable. But he apparently was not happy with the repair job. He sent me a new pair along with them! Good customer service at Badger grips for sure.

Re: Finally have a few minutes to write up my range trip

That is great, on your aimed shooting with the SP101 your using slick grips hard to control even on large grips. They look sharp on the gun. I wouldn't have them checkered to get a better grip. We all need to shoot more. In my compation I really don't shot enough, I am much better than when I started but I could do much better. I don't shoot enough. Range time is needed, top shooter shoot alot and many times a week, now I just need the money.
So for me its going to have to be less gun buying and more reloading and shooting. Wish me luck on this as I feel just about ever gun in the world winks at me for some reason.

They are both like drugs. Need more guns, need more ammo, need more time at the range, need more powder, need more primers, need more bullets, need more reloading equipment, need more hunting grounds, need more animals to hunt, need more reactive targets to shoot, need more time on gunnerforum,

You both sound very needy. You need to send me all your stuff so I can help you over this terrible addiction.

It could be worse...........you could have the T/C contender affliction and all the baggage that brings with it.........

or the old muzzleloader and all the "accessories" that brings to the table.............

Range time is always a "small slice of heaven" Cruelshoes.........you'll get 'er figured out. I'm fortunate to have Kim usually lookin' over my shoulder pointing out any flaws in my technique so that when I'm practicing he can take credit for my center shots.
