At the range

I took my Security Six and my .454 Encore to the range Sunday, put up a target @ 100 yards and tried to sight in the .454. I got most of the shots in the 8 & 9 ring, several touching, but as spoiled as I am from my rifles, I thought it looked like a pattern rather than a group. The others around me thought it was pretty good, but I wasn't real pleased.
When I got finished with the Encore I put up another target @ 100 yards and started to pop it with the 4" Security Six, with random loads, both cast and jacketed.

I did surprisingly well considering that the loads were all different.

No pictures. I forgot to bring the camera again..

Re: At the range

i really need to get back to the range..............

Just too many irons in the fire here as of late. The 454........is that comfortable in the Encore? I would guess as far as energy and bullet drop goes, the 454 is what? a 200 yd cartridge? If so, then by my standards a 3" 100 yd group would be fine.....

But alas.....my accuracy standards at distance are probably not impressive.......the only time i tried to work at it was in my younger years, i was more concerned about T/C contender accuracy than a rifle...

Re: At the range

Its not a good idea to shoot jacket bullet after shooting lead bullet, ya will ruin a barrel doing that. Glad that you did get some range time that is always good.

Re: At the range

The rifle that shots this group has over 10,000 cast bullet shot threw it and has never had a jacket round shot threw it . Five jacket bullet shot threw it would ruin a cast bullet seasoned barrel and the copper fowling would cause it to start leading up where a season barrel don't lead up easily . After cleaning the copper fowling out of the barrel it will take 500 + cast rounds shot threw it to reseason the barrel again . My SASS/CAS guns are cast bullet shooter and at the end of a match a wet patch of Hopps and a dry one and the barrel is done , the forcing cone is the only thing that takes a little work to get cleaned up . I recut my forcing cones to 11 degrees which helps out alot . .

Re: At the range

Sounds like you had a good time. Have you tried .45 Colt in that .454 barrel? Different .454 loads? In my experience, the .454 in a very accurate round, and of course the Encore is famous for its accuracy. Give it ammo it likes, and I am sure it will shoot nice, tiny groups.

Re: At the range

...seems like a Contender would fill a niche between handgun range/power and rifle/carbine range/power...and it'd fit in a briefcase easily...hmmm......

Re: At the range

All of the loads from the Encore have been cast since day one. Some have been 300 grain LBT bullets, some RCBS 300 grain, and the remainder 300 grain Lee bullets, all with a gas check. The .357 shoots everything well enough for me, jacketed or cast, altho 99% of my bullets for any of my handguns are cast. Leading hasn't been an issue ever.

I need to get some Unique and try my RCBS 270 gr. SAA bullet from the Encore in a .454 loading.
My heavier .45 Colt rounds shoot very well from this pistol, especially the RCBS 270 SAA bullets., altho they do shoot high.
It does well in my Blackhawk convertable.

I don't shoot in competition, I shoot because I like to, it's relaxing, satisfying and gives me empties to handload. When I get to the range, I'll take one or two specific firearms that I need to tweak, and a few others to plink with. I'll usually stay three or four hours ...

That is a perfectly poetic statement. I might have to make it my new motto!

Re: At the range

Yes shooting does do that, and you get to clean guns too. Always liked doing that.
