well, this morning we had our 2nd annual County championship for active and retired law enforcement officers......and i again put it together and range mastered it. Had a purty good turn-out. An older gentleman who is retired from the border patrol won the distinguished handgun match with his s&w 686 shooting 38 spl loads. I managed 2nd place with my duty sig. And again this year, several officers with auto's had either a mal-function, ran out of time, or did a bad reload drill which put them out of the hunt.............no alibi's allowed when i am running the range..., This same feller also won the Texas Star shoot-out with the same revolver............kind of funny as guys with glocks and high caps were emptying the mags trying to hit the 5 plates but this gentleman did it in 5 shots and in fast time.......now this was indeed humbling to the auto crowd......but i did do something "evil"... the final match was something new i added this year.......a 50 yard rifle bullseye match......tried to make it where anyone could participate so i made the rules simple. any centerfire rifle (deer rifles welcomed) 10 rds in 5 minutes (tons of time and everyone can afford a half box of shells) all shots from the standing position (howl, moan, groan on that) seperate optic and iron sight division to keep the playing field level.... i did it this way because not everyone has a tactical rifle.......or a shooting matt, or a bi-pod........and not everyone has a scope or dot. It worked as we had lever action 30-30's and a 357 on the line along with some bolt guns to compete against the black rifles. My choice of target was some old NRA pistol bullseye targets.......just set them up at 50 yards and they worked just fine. And some still howled!!!!!!! Still a good time and an eye opening experience for many as to what their skills are shooting at 50 yards while standing...........and yep, you guessed it.......the retired BP feller also won this match..........but with one heck of a tricked out ar-15 with scope and the sweetest trigger i have ever felt on an AR......I managed to win the iron site portion of this match with my issue m-16. I probably should also mention that the BP feller is fully retired, and his hobby is shooting as he makes a few matches here and there........... All in all, a good time had by all..........and many wanting to have this type of shoot more often so i guess next year i will try to put one on in the spring and in the fall. I was wanting to do it twice this year but just been too busy......and no one else wants to run the match. |

Nice work, Deputy. A good time and some thought provoking challenges that might save lives by pointing out weaknesses in training habits..

Sounds like it was a fun time, shooting standing was a good idea.

Great report deputy. Not only are you providing some fun for your leo's, I think that type of experience could potentially save lives in the future. Well done, sir.

That sounds fun. I am glad that you stuck to your guns on the standing stage. Nothing worse than men whining about rules laid down 2 weeks ahead of time. Also, I love hearing about it when a revolver guy beats a bunch of semi guys. I am not nearly that good, but it gives me something to aim for.

WHAT TH' HECK!!!! Offhand!!! Horrors!!!!! And, at 50 yards!!! Nicely done....bein' able to shoot at that distance with your service...or any rifle/carbine for that matter...is definitely not too much to ask! Not really surprised 'bout th' Gentleman with the wheelgun...somehow, it kinda fits, and I'm sure there's a message in there somewhere. When our ammo budget allows, we have a sorta "fun-shoot" once or twice a year. Everybody really enjoys shootin' and it provides practice for those who might not otherwise do so. |
