45 ACP casings w/ small pistol primer pockets!

Went to Wally World to look for 45 ACP ammo... Found that Federal is back after being M.I.A. due to the recall.....

Believe it or not, they have put small pistol primers in their new cartridges..... 45 ACP brass casings with small pistol primer pockets would create a head ache for my keeping them separated from my other casings...

No thanks!

are you sure it was not 45 GAP instead of ACP?

I have seen that before as well. Don't know why in the heck they would do that.

Re: 45 ACP casings w/ small pistol primer pockets!

deputy: I heard about this on another forum and went in to check it out myself. The new batches of Federal 45 ACP that Wal-Mart is selling has small pistol primers.... I opened the box and checked it myself.

I look at it like this.. They may as well be steel casings.

I'm wondering how the smaller charge can work correctly.... Even if it does, I can't be sorting casings to reload the same caliber in different primer batches.

I hope this doesn't become a common thing. I don't want to have to worry about primer size when buying cases. I don't buy anything off the shelf, so no worry there.

i've seen 7.62x39 with different primers.....remington sp i believe..........

by not makeing it to spec, don't they realize some joker out there not paying attention and going by the book using a LP primer is going to crush detonate one?

Don't worry about them, they load and shoot just fine. Just keep them separated from the brass with LP so you won't try to stuff a LP in that little hole. They really come in handy if primers are hard to come by in your area, or you just want to go into the woods or somewhere and just blast away without having to worry about picking them up.

well, with the price of components, i would not be suprised if a plastic case ammo comes on the market as a serious disposable competitor........of course the govt will want it to be bio-degradable.....

think of it as a polymer version of cci blazer aluminum..............

Re: 45 ACP casings w/ small pistol primer pockets!

I have hundreds of them, they suck. Now I sort all my brass and keep the small primered ones seperate. I still use them, but it is a pain in the ass if they get mixed in with my regular brass.

You guys remember the caseless ammo they had back in the late 80s for that HK rifle that was supposed to revolutionize firearms? Didn't get too far.

Several manufacturer's are making Sm Primer 45ACP. The NT is for Non-Toxic.
I sort mine as well. Takes a little extra time but saves lots of aggrivation at the press. If any of you guys don't want your Sm Primer brass let me know I'd be interested in taking off your hands for cheap.

Federal lost me for a customer because of this..... Plenty of other factory cartridges with standard LPP's. Federal's powder is fairly dirty burning anyway.

I toss any I pick up at the range as I can imagine trying to cram a LPP into a SPP pocket. Pow! Makes no sense, if they wanted to go non-toxic why not do so with LPP's. Some genius figured it would set them apart I guess.

Small Pistol Primers in .45ACP

Some years back when I was working in an indoor range, we had several boxes of Non Toxic Winchester ammo. The brass case used a Large Pistol Primer, but the Flash Hole was larger in diameter, about 3/32d's of an inch to 1/8th of an inch in diameter. Label on the box said that they were reloadable with any of the components on the market. They didn't last.

I loaded about 100 of them with standard LP primers and they fuctioned well with a variety of bullets, cast and jacketed. Now we have to sort them out.

I use the small pistol primer brass when I shoot Wild Bunch matches so I do not feel the pain of losing brass that's sent flying into the grass, sand, rocks, etc and lost to the brass trolls.
