Re: strange bullets

wow....had to think and look on that one..........

40 S&W cases filled with lead and then loading the 40 cartridge itself into a 44 mag case?

the 40 S&W case is widest i believe at the rim with a measure of .424".......a 44 mag is what at the throat? .429"???

sounds almost like a brass jacket version of a wadcutter design home brewed projectile.

Re: strange bullets

Yep,,He fills them with led and crimps them in the 44 mag after the powder and shoots them like a lead jacked bullets.

Re: strange bullets

First I ever heard of anything like that. Shooters are a resoursefull lot. I know I fella at the range that takes fired .22LR brass and forms them into .223 bullets to reload. Time consuming, and the equipment to do it cost a lot of money!

Re: strange bullets

And as an aside, you can load 45acp cases into .480 Ruger brass...

I haven't tried that as I sold my .480 like an idiot...

Re: strange bullets

Jacket bullet use copper alloy jackets , not brass . If you can not cast a bullet not to lead in your gun , maybe you shouldn't be casting bullets . The main reason for jacket is to use soft lead alloy to expand at low speed and not lead barrel . 40 cal brass is too thick to expand unless you hit a brick wall , plus it is very tuff on a barrel and raises chamber pressures super high with the same charge and bullet weight . Corbin use empty 22 lr brass to form jackets in 17 and 22 cal bullets , but that brass is thinner and softer than 40 cal brass and shot in rifles that will hold 50,000 psi plus . Some people like rolling the dice . If you season a barrel to shoot cast bullets it wouldn't lead up . I NEVER shoot a jacket bullet in my cast bullet guns .

Re: strange bullets

And who said I can't cast bullets that don't lead? Who mentioned leading at all?

I'll be nice and say that if YOU don't want to try it, that's fine. It's not hard on the barrel, and I wasn't looking for expansion...

Re: strange bullets

You have your opinion and I have mine . I swage all my benchrest bullets in the 80's for matches . And Corbin never uses brass for there jacket . [only 22lr rifle] and they don't make dies to swage any cartridge brass down to make jackets either . There alot of new reloader need to see the other side of the coin to make a judgment call if they want to try it or not . I posted my opinion earlier and stand by it .

Before Berger and couple other custom bullet maker came about , making your own bullets from 22 brass or Cobin's jackets was the only way to go if you want to win a benchrest match . Factory stuff like Sierra , Hornady , Speer , ect couldn't hold a candle to hand made bullets .
