handi-rifle fun.....

took a buddy to the range today so we could sight in a H&R break-over handi rifle in 22-250. He had bought this off another feller for $125........wish i could find deals like that.

Anyways, we slapped the $30 simmons bargin 4x scope on it he had bought at Academy and gave it a whirl. With a rough bore sight of looking down the bore we got close enough to get on paper at 25 yards and went from there.

He started getting worried as the first two times he shot her she popped open on her own. I took the barrel off, got a rag and wipped off all the oil that i could see in the action and on the locking lugs. If you oil these guns too much it can create this pop open problem. It did the trick and no more troubles.

This gun was an absolute joy to shoot.......no recoil and good enough considering our make-shift bench and the plain scope. Intended purpose is a deer rifle for a boy...........good enough.

Wish he would had bought some cheaper shells though....these were 64 gr winchester SP's at thirty dollars a box.......

told him if he gets a lee loader i'll get him started in reloading.

Those handi rifles are real bargains. I have owned a few, and they have all been tack drivers.

I've got a 30-06 Handi-rifle that I have had several years. Plenty good enough for Deer and Coyotes. I reload for it. Wish I had one in Stainless, as the Blued ones are prone to rust.

yep, i have sure noticed that myself about the handi's made the past decade or so....the bluing is not the best compared to the really old hand-rifles with the thinner barrel profile that i have runned acrossed....usually 20ga/30-30 combos. Their bluing seems a bit richer and deeper than the current heavier barrel profiles.

if i was to get one today, i would probably camo tape it or do a camo paint job on it. Wonder if the wife's uncle (has a lathe) could thin a barrel or at least flute one severely to lighten the profile and make her less muzzle heavy..............

Put some automotive paste wax on it, won't stop it completely but it will slow it down.

Re: handi-rifle fun.....

I had a 223 special run from Dick's Sporting Goods that was camo. I never even shot it. I had it for a long while collecting dust and then traded it off. I'd really like to have the 45 Colt version, but they don't give them away.

Spray the gun with stove black. It'll keep forever.

...in times to come...these "outside the box" ideas will be important...the gun stores will be closed and we'll have to improvise...lubes and finishes...parts, let alone mags and ammo, will be gold...

I've looked at these before and wouldn't mind having one in .357 or .44 Magnum. Maybe one day I'll break down and get one.
