ruger mini-14 full-auto

my local PD chief recently acquired for his dept two stainless full auto mini 14 govt models................i can't wait to try one out...........never have tried a full auto mini 14.

always prefered a mini to an AR.........

The AR is superior in about every way...........but the classic lines, wood stock, and the mini 14 reliability.........gotta love it.

this ought to be interesting.......

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

Why would a leo need a full auto? If your going to site the Hollywood shooting it was semi auto ar's that stopped that shoot out. And of course they had to go to the local gunshop to get them. Now it suppose to be a bad thing to have them for sale to the citzens, but had the shop owner not had them the killing would have gone on much long and more people would have been hurt or killed. I dis agree on leos having anything full auto, most are doing good to try and control their side arm. I am siting the car jacking in California where the CHP shot some 30 to 40 rounds at a stopped car jacker and all but one bullet were hitting the road in front of the car jacker. We watched the car jacker dance to the bullet hitting in front of hit. One officer took carefull aim and shot him in the leg. I wonder just how many rounds would have been zipping through the desert that day had they had full auto.

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

I would like to shoot one too, Deputy. I can't argue the fact that the AR is a better weapon, at least as far as accuracy is concerned, but I, too, love the Mini 14. It just looks like a real gun! And the one I currently own is much more accurate than any of the older Minis. It's zero doesn't wander all over creation after the barrel heats up, as my older guns did.

...I agree that LEOs don't need full auto...but I, too, would love to shoot some...ever since the American 180 back in the 70s, I've wanted to shoot some...had a French 9mm machine gun back in the 70s...for about 3 hours...traded it for a S&W M39...wish I still had THAT...

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

As gunman said after the older mini 14's heat up the zero is all over the place, now lets see leo with a full auto and they wonder all over the place. So how many bystands are going to be shot?
While I was in the Army another Sgt and I shot a M60 at a full size target well over 700 rounds when down range only one bullet hit the target. I learned all I needed to know about full auto. yes I agree that the thugs have them, but they aren't suppose to have any gun at all. I feel we do need to issue to the leo's the best weapons and have then trained on how to shoot them. I do feel that the leo's need much more range time. I also understand that the public does ask alot of the leo's these days.
We could do something to try and make their job a little easier as well as remove those that shouldn't wear the unform. Same where I work also.

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

well, while i agree with you in substance that LEO's do not need full auto weapons..............i must disagree with you in theory...........

now if that sounds like a contradiction or left field...please hear me out. Been doing this job for a lot of years and have seen all kinds of crap......and i have yet seen a job where a full auto was required. A solid bolt action or a lever would had done just fine and more efficiently.........that is the substance argument.

But if we go down this road then we might as well say that civilians also do not need full auto weapons.......if we decide to castorate the police, then the civilians will not be far behind........

That same substance argument concerning LEO's can also be equally applied when it comes to magazine restrictions as again history and stats have proven that even the 6 shot revolver will still get the job done...........therefore, why do citizens need auto loaders and large capacity mags if the LEO's do not actually need them?

the individual officers and the actual depts have to jump thru the same hoops and loops that a civilian does money and paperwork wise to obtain a full auto.

We really can not afford to put another class of guns out of reach by arguments of necessity.

The chance of really needing a full auto is slim to none especially in my area......the chances of me getting into a confrontation with my Ruger p89 and running 3-15 rd mags dry is equally slim...........but so are the chances of any civillian anywhere in this Country.

We just can not stand the thought of not being prepared regardless of the percentages of chance or statistics.............

i do not know this Chief's line of thinking for wanting full auto............yes they require extensive training, they require an equally large ammo budget to obtain proficiency compared to a semi.....But in the ruger's favor......its not an evil looking black assault rifle..........it is a fuzzy bunny good looking stainless wood stock thing of beauty. the public is not "alarmed" because it is not "evil and black" looking so it is a PR victory.........and whether they need it or not, they are better prepared for SHTF. It is another tool available (most likely not needed), they are better armed and in thoery better prepared.

Sorry for the bass-akwards rant............and yes we don't "require" full auto weapons....... but that decision should rest with the individual officers and/or their departments....its their butts on the line...............in the same way that a civillian picks and chooses what they want to arm themselves with...even if they really don't "need" it.....it is the civillian's butt on the line..........

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

...arm 'em well...but I'd limit 'em to 3-shot bursts...few shooters can handle full auto accurately...just my old hard-headed opinion...

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

i started law enforcement with a 4" duty revolver, a snub in my pocket, and a riot gun...............

if i have my way, towards retirement, i'm gonna end LEO service that way.............providing i can talk the sheriff into letting me put a revolver back on my hip.........

(perhaps my last day of service)............

i'd like to go out the way i came in..........

i still believe the revolver is a viable tool in this Country..............

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

...so do I ...an old bull with a holster-worn M19 blued commands respect in my book...he prolly can dot my eye with it quicker'n a youngun' with a wondermag autoloader...I love revolvers...I'd be as comfy carrying a .45acp 4" w/moon clips as my P90...and the backup will likely ALWAYS be a wheelgun...

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

Just loaded up my M64 and two speed strips with Speed Strips with Speer Gold Dots for my Arizona trip next week, fits in my pocket, fanny pack or holster and the wife has her s650 Taurus, retired the Sig and 1911 to the safe for a couple of weeks. Those should get the job done if need be.

In 1982 I shot the Mini14 with a 3 shot burst which I like much better then when it was in full auto mode .

Re: ruger mini-14 full-auto

No civilian needs a full auto gun. Need is a stupid reason to regulate full auto firearms. I don't disagree with a police department using them. It might be an extra liability that the Chief/Sheriff does not want to incur, but that is their choice for their department. I would love to have a full auto gun just because, but my state does not believe citizens' have the right to own them. Oh well, couldn't afford to feed it anyways.
