JB, how are these as afar as accuracy goes. I've read that they suck, and I've read that they are real good. I also read that barrels are supposed to be fitted to your gun by the factory. But some barrels will fit ok without that being done, right? I'm thinking seriously about getting one if the Colt sells, but I don't know if I'd be better off getting a bolt action in 223 and then one in a deer caliber such as 30-06, or 270, or 308 down the road.

Re: For those looking for a H&R Handi Rifle

BH here is GBO AKA Greybeards Outdoors http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php/board,126.0.html where you will probably find the biggest following of H&R Handi Rifles. It is also where I am one of the monderators for the Montana Hunting room.

As you know I got my H&R Handi Rifle origanally in 7mm-08 and its accuracy is the best I have seen out of a centerfire cartridge Handi Rifle so far. I also own the H&R Sportster in 22 WMR which is also very accurate. Now I purchased the .223 Bull Barrel from another member and yes, it would not fit and would have required some fitting on my part. I chose not to fit it, because I'm just not a gunsmith but that information is available at GBO in the FAQ section. I in turn traded it off to another guy who wanted to trade his .204 Ruger barrel. Well this one fit tight, but need just a bit of filing to get the lock up to work, as it now does. This was an easy fix, and I have no complaints.

I have not been able to check the accuracy of the .204 Ruger barrel but, the previous owner reported it was dead nuts accurate with the 32-gr Hornady V Max bullet/cartridge.

You may also remember that I covered that additional barrels can be purchased from H&R 1871 LLC which is now owned by Remington Arms. They still have the barrel program, and it is at this time should you choose to add additional barrels that you send your receiver in to have them fit them there, or they will not sell you the barrels.

I have also previously owned the .35 Whelen and 45-70's in both the short barrel and the Buffalo Classic in the 32" barrel. Those were also accurate if I did my part. The only reason that I gave up the 45-70 is from the advice of my doctor that was against heavy recoiling firearms back when I had my mild stroke.

I would have no reason not to purchase another H&R Handi Rifle, and would recomend them to anyone.

Re: For those looking for a H&R Handi Rifle

I have one left in 30/30 win.

I finally found a man that is going to re-chamber it for me to 30/30 A.I.
Now maybe it will get to see what the outside looks like. It hasn't been fired since before my wife had her shoulder replaced, and as her health is going downhill fast, she doesn't shoot any more. Soooo, I'll just get a new set of dies and have a new project!
