Which one?

Ok here's the deal. You are off to hunt deer with an outfitter. It's a good outfit and you are pretty much gauranteed you'll get a deer if you do your part. It might be Whitetail or Mule deer. Now the question is, what caliber do take, and what type of rifle? Semi, bolt, single shot, etc. It doesn't have to be one you own. I'd make a poll, but the options are endless and I wouldn't be able to put in everything that everyone would want.

Re: Which one?

It doesn't matter really. Ther could be close shots or long shots. Open country and some thick timber. K?

Re: Which one?

this could be "what-if'd" so many ways with so many variables as to distance, timber and such that a feller could literally out-think himself.........which is part of the fun....and the start of gun collections......

action type matters little to me. Its the first shot that counts most. A running deer generally equates to a 98% probability of more misses than hits for the vast majority of hunters i know........i think more about weight and prefer lighter guns/shorter length.....which is why i have a 308 carbine as an "all-around" jack of all trades rifle......i can't do everything "superior" with it......but i can do everything i do "well" with it.

I'd take a sufficient caliber in a gun i am comfortable/confident with and practice with it from field postions. I'd take a 2nd rifle as a "back-up" .......just in case Murphy's Law rears its ugly head.....

And i will not hunt with a borrowed gun....my cross to bare.....not the memories i want to take with me....but i'm stubborn about such.......

if i was to get away from the 308 it would be to the 6.5 swede as an "all-around"........

A set of cross sticks and light weight gun like mine . This gun is under 7 lbs the way you see it . The gun is zero for 300 yds

Re: Which one?

Same answer as all around rifle poll. My 30-06 bolt gun. It is the one gun that I have that can do close or long. If I could afford to buy another gun just for this hunt, it would be a ruger no.1 in .270. I really want one of those and a guided trip would be a great excuse to get one.

Re: Which one?

My Ruger M77 in 270 would be my short-long distance choice

Re: Which one?

Lets see, 270 Weatherby mag for long range, 7x57 or 308 for every thing else but heavy woods, for that a 444 or 45/70.

Re: Which one?

I have always been partial to the 30/06 in a bolt action rifle.

Re: Which one?

I too would want to bring a bolt action rifle. Just not sure which caliber. I think I'd be fine with 270, 308, or 30-06. So many choices.
