My New gun off the net

I won the bid on this at Gun Broker tonight . I was the only bidder and there was one 1 hour earlier had 8 bids and sold for $75 more and this one had nicer wood . Will shoot a 58 cal 510 gr mini-ball at 1400 FPS if you can take the pain . If your smart keep it below the sound barrier for accuracy and save 1/2 the powder . It has a round ball twist and will push a 260 gr round ball over 1700 FPS and accurate too ....

It is a Ranson of Italy , were in business from 1945 to 1979 was one of the top 1863 Remy Zouave makers . I had one in the early 70's and it was a shooter and I was always sorry I sold it ...

...looks like fun...if kicking your own ass is fun...might dampen the recoil by drilling the stock under the buttplate and filling it with lead shot....

Re: My New gun off the net

The book says 170 gr of 2F/ 1400 for a 505 gr mini-ball and 180 gr of 2f / 1700 for a 260 gr round ball . If my memory is correct , 50 gr of 2F was a magic load for both bullets and was very accurate and super easy on the shooter for target work and keep the hard hitters for hunting ..

Re: My New gun off the net

Many BP rifle loads exceeded 1,000 fps. Some revolver loads approached it. The .44-40 and the .45 Colt loaded with 40 grains would run about 900fps from a 7 1/2" barrel I think. These were potent loads.

I think the Walker Colt cap and ball revolver with round balls hit 1,000 fps but the ball was light. I think the .36 Navy with round ball was around 800 fps. This was not much on paper but the round ball is actually good at transferring energy to a target so I think they would be about like a .380 with a hollow point bullet. The elongated bullet was better for penetration but the round ball was probably the better man stopper as long as it had enough penetration.

Barrel length had a big effect on velocity with black powder.

Re: My New gun off the net

This load is 2000 fps if I remember correctly ... and 160 of 2F is over 2300 fps .

Re: My New gun off the net

I got 300 of these on there way , 505 gr sized to .575 . These are very hard to cast and this guy is the master on mini-balls .
