Thinkin' about one of these. I know Marlin and Ruger offer them in bolt guns, which would be my preference. Any suggestions? Molon Labe Kim |

Hey, it's my turn to warn you. These little guys are addictive as heck. They make super fun short range varmiters (less than 200 yards), or cheap to shoot bench guns. But be warned, they are picky as heck about ammo. There are several different manufactures of ammo with a few different bullet offerings from each one, and once you find the sweet spot...buy a ton of it. The first time I shot a black bird and it went POOF at a 160 yards, I was seriously hooked on this round. As to your original question...I have shot the Marlin, and was very impressed with their laminate thumb hole stock. It fit me very well. The trigger was good, but I don't think it was as good as the accutrigger on my Savage 93R17. I've never shot or even handled the Ruger so I can be much help there. The only problems that I have seen with these guns are they don't like wind, and they don't like a dirty bore. A bore snake is a must for a range session, and if the wind is blowing hard, I don't even bother shooting past 100 yards. This is a typical 50 yard group with my Savage, I have shot smaller groups than this at 100 if the wind is still. ![]() |

most around here go with the heavy barrel marlin.....and they are plenty accurate......about the main complaint is accuracy suffers after a couple hundred rounds and needs cleaning which means a new cleaning rod because the bore is so tiny......... Ruger had a lever 17 V and it was a fun gun but the trigger was horrible. Don't know about the ruger bolts but they are high dollar. I don't know if ruger is still making the single six in 17 or if its been dropped. I guess this little sucker is laying down the copper fouling............. I do like the cartridge and the ammo has been staying available during past buying panics.........but the price sure has been creeping up like everything else gun related. I have enough trouble feeding what guns/calibers i have on hand and just can't justify another gun/caliber/mouth to feed.......... |

I jumped on the 17 bandwagon early on, bought a blue 77. My son and I went to the range with it and it was so accurate that I ordered the target modal when we got to the car. The two are very accurate. I have a Single Six Hunter and a plane old Single Six that I have not spent much time with as of yet, but what little time I have spent with them they look promising.

...not to be obnoxious, but wouldn't a .223 buck wind better and be just as long range and much cheaper to shoot???

Well, I don't know about cheaper, but the rest is true. I just think a .17 would be neat and I want one. Molon Labe Kim |
